SUGAR LAND Mayor David Wallace will not run as a write-in Republican candidate for the congressional seat vacated by Tom DeLay.
Wallace announced his decision about the Congressional District 22 race today at a news conference at Sugar Land City Hall.
The decision comes after Republican party leaders from Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston and Brazoria counties selected Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs as the party's choice to run in the November election as a write-in candidate.
No Republican will appear on the ballot because DeLay stepped down after winning the nomination in March. A court ruled the party could not replace him on the ballot.
The only candidates on the ballot will be Democrat Nick Lampson and Libertarian Bob Smither.

Good. Now, the Republicans just need to 'educate' people to spell Sekula-Gibbs as correct as possible, since the Democrats may draft one of the Bee Gees to confuse the voters...

I really didn't think Wallace would withdraw. This gives us an outside shot at holding the seat.

I think she ought to have her name changed to a symbol of some sort like prince did. That way she can claim any incidental mark on the allot at all as an attempt to make the symbol. :)

Name for her is not a problem...they'll accept Gibbs, Sekula ... they'll accept her first name in fact...

wallace will run, just not this time. it is his goal in life and he has been trying for delays job for ten years.
To: TWfromTEXAS
He may but I understand he's got lots of garbage to overcome. I like what I've seen of him...but he's not as popular as I thought. So now the Republican vote will not be split. Thank The Lord...
I'm upset with Delay for leaving 22 high and dry. Maybe one day, we'll learn why he actually did that.

I'm one of the most (If not the most) fervent DeLay fans out there and I am upset that he didn't go ahead and run after they said he couldn't be replaced.
What a deal.

The Rats have run dead people before... Well, that's only fair since most of their voters are deceased, too.

A court ruled the party could not replace him on the ballot. I guess the Toricelli Rule doesn't apply down here, huh?
