Weekly wrapup of Virginia Campaign News. Post 'em if you've got 'em...

Last Week's Thread:

Virginia Campaign News - October, 17 2005 - Thread XXV - 3 more weeks

From the RTD:

Education tops list of candidates' concerns
Kaine leading on budget; Kilgore on law & order
by Jeffy Schapiro
Readying to pick a new governor, most Virginians say their choice will be guided by which candidate is strongest on education, the budget and transportation -- not the topic du jour: the death penalty.

I think the emphasis on the Death Penalty is only backfiring in Jeffy's imagination. Kilgore's response to Kaine's response is excellent.

Outrageous Games

KAINE'S QUEST
by Jeffy Schapiro
As a child, Tim Kaine was badly pigeon-toed. Concerned neighbors in Overland Park, Kan., urged his parents to take him to an orthopedist.

Schapiro's profile on Timmy.

And another thing...

Washington Times Endorsement
Jerry Kilgore for governor
By every measure, we know where Mr. Kilgore stands. He is the superior candidate. The Washington Times is pleased to endorse Jerry Kilgore for governor of Virginia.

I don't think the endorsement by Linwood Holton should count since Holton is Kaine's father-in-law!

Yes, but Linwood Holton hasn't been a Republican since the early 70s.

I hadn't seen the breakdown on the rural numbers in the M-D poll. Those are very good for us.

Sure hope the rural vote is motivated to turn out on Election Day!

I don't know how accurate they are on elections, but Kilgore is WAY up on Tradesports tonight.

Wonder what they know. You think it's based on the polls?

It's way ahead of what the polls say. Kilgore is at 73(ish) and Kaine is back in the 30s.

But Kilgore was in the 60s this a.m.

I don't know how they figure it all out.

It's Finally Friday!

Former Va. GOP nominee for governor backs Kaine
Durrette, who lost 1985 contest, says state would fare better with Democrat
by Jeffy Schapiro
In a blast from the past and with a poke at his party, an unsuccessful Republican candidate for governor yesterday endorsed Democrat Timothy M. Kaine for Virginia's top job.

Well, that's a shock...NOT. Wyatt Durrette is the only Republican to ever make me vote for a Democrat.

Byrne wins backing of police, fire groups
by Pamela Stallsmith
At a Capitol news conference, the former state lawmaker and U.S. representative from Fairfax announced she had received the backing of the Virginia Police Benevolent Association and Virginia Professional Firefighters.

I attended my first county GOP meeting this morning (I have only attended the women's meetings in the past) and now I'm waiting for the guys from Norfolk to show up with the Kilgore billboards. They were trying to locate road frontage on busy roads.......and I've got 500 feet.....when they realized the location they jumped at the invitation.............my front yard is going to be a sea of blue and orange. LOL!!!!

My post to Corin from the Kilgore/GOP woes thread:

IN ADDITION, the President, the First Lady and Cheney have been in Virginia on Jerry's behalf.

Thank you for stating what I had planned to say. I was speaking with a young man from the 2nd district (Thelma Drake's district) this morning who was given what he considers being the privlege of being one of the greeters on the tarmac when the President got off Air Force 1.

This young man, from the Norfolk area, spent the entire day on the Eastern Shore putting up Kilgore billboards over here. My husband about freaked when about dusk he noticed the billboard at the west end of our property. We had given them permission to put up as many as they wanted and were willing to help put them up. The response I got when I called one of the other guys asking why they didn't let us know they were here was "We didn't want to bother you, you volunteered enough help for one day."

My 7yo old loves working the polls with mommy on election day, she knows I will take her out for lunch or ice cream once we're done :)

She helped sway a lot of undecided voters in Delaware for us in the past - I'm going to use the same tactic here in Virginia!!!!!!

I really wanted 2 of those big signs - but 1 is better than none and I have 3 of the small ones all in a row on the east/west road we sit on. The big one is facing westerly and can be seen from the intersection stop signs on the north/south road. so I guess we're covered!
