Weekly wrapup of Virginia Campaign News. Post 'em if you've got 'em...

Last Week's Thread:

Virginia Campaign News - October, 17 2005 - Thread XXV - 3 more weeks

From the RTD:

Education tops list of candidates' concerns
Kaine leading on budget; Kilgore on law & order
by Jeffy Schapiro
Readying to pick a new governor, most Virginians say their choice will be guided by which candidate is strongest on education, the budget and transportation -- not the topic du jour: the death penalty.

I think the emphasis on the Death Penalty is only backfiring in Jeffy's imagination. Kilgore's response to Kaine's response is excellent.

Outrageous Games

KAINE'S QUEST
by Jeffy Schapiro
As a child, Tim Kaine was badly pigeon-toed. Concerned neighbors in Overland Park, Kan., urged his parents to take him to an orthopedist.

Schapiro's profile on Timmy.

From the weekend:

Race for governor is 'total tossup'
Kilgore's 2-point lead falls within the poll's margin of error, and 9 percent remain undecided
by Jeffy Schapiro
Barely two weeks until the election, the bitter race for Virginia governor is still a nail-biter.

I still think 1) they under sample the GOP. 2) money and momentum is on our side.

'No girls' rule helped shape Byrne's career
by Pamela Stallsmith
Leslie L. Byrne wanted to play baseball as a youngster, so she tried out for Little League.

I can't get past the headline without saying things I shouldn't, so I'll decline to comment.

Potts revels in his independent streak
by Paul Bradley
Leave it to Russ Potts to get under the skin of one of the most powerful and influential Republicans in the nation.

Some call it independence. Some call it treason.

Lots of Letters to the Editor over the weekend. If you get a chance, fire one off to your local propaganda sheet.

Treason sounds about right. I hope the GOP has the guts to make Russ Potts' political career history and his personna a non grata anethma.

We were discussig this Saturday at our monthly meeting - none of us has been able to get a letter published in favor of the Republican ticket - yet there are numerous pro Kaine letters.

In the yard signage war, Kaine signs outnumber Kilgore signs about 3 to 1 in my part of the county. But, the Republican ticket billboard type signs out number Kaine signs 3 to zip up here. In fact we are only aware of 2 billboard type Kaine signs in the whole county.

I was just digging around.

You know, when the SurveyUSA poll came out last week that showed Kaine ahead by 1 pt. it was "Death Penalty ads hurting Kilgore."

Now that Mason-Dixon is out with Kilgore up by 2 pts. it's "Dealth Penalty ads not helping Kilgore."

hmmmm...may mean nothing...

But I'm cautiously optimistic.

I finally saw some ads this weekend during the football games and the Martinsville NASCAR race. Kaine is really unlikeable. He distorts Jerry's positon on taxes while he's driving in traffic. I didn't know until recently that Kaine is from St. Louis or someplace out that way. I always assumed he is from the Richmond area.

McDonnell is advertising heavily up here on the public safety issue.

I like this one for Kilgore with George Allen the best.

Mac Watson pushed me over the edge yesterday. I don't know where the conversation started but what I heard him saying was that all charismatics are snake handlers. He went on to be very insulting to Christians and dared us to complain.

He literally said "get me fired if you don't like what I'm saying."

Well, I did what ~I~ could about that.

I missed all of that. I guess that's a good thing or I'd have had a stroke.

He bashes Catholics all the time - blames it on having to go to Catholic school when he was "growing" up. I'm not a Catholic and it bothers me how much he rails against the Catholic Church. So, his antics yesterday don't surprise me.

He needs to go......somewhere else. Antarctica perhaps.

Republican Party of Virginia | Kate Obenshain Griffin, Chairman

Wednesday, October 26, 2005 www.vagop.com

Dear Republican Friend,

Less than two weeks remain until Virginians make a critical choice for governor between Jerry Kilgore's strong conservative vision for Virginia and Tim Kaine's extreme liberal record.

The two latest polls indicate Jerry Kilgore continuing to build momentum.  Sunday's statewide Mason Dixon poll showed Jerry leading 44%-42%, and Monday's Rasmussen poll reaffirmed Jerry leading Kaine 48%-46%.

Mason Dixon also reported leads for Bill Bolling and Bob McDonnell, 4 and 8 points respectively.

While the momentum is on our side, this election is very close!

The difference between Jerry Kilgore and all of our Republican candidates winning and losing will hinge on our grassroots Get-Out-The Vote (GOTV) operation.

We are counting on you to push us to victory, and are asking that you consider signing up to volunteer for one four-hour shift in the last 96 hours of the campaign

I have included below additional analysis on the current status of the governor's race. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the Republican Party of Virginia.

Sincerely,

Kate Obenshain Griffin
Chairman
Republican Party of Virginia

I volunteer at the Moose Lodge on Wed. nights for bingo, and then have a beer (or 2) when I'm done.............I was really surprised with the reaction to the political ads on the TV while I was in social quareters.

Judging from the number of Kaine yard signs I've been seeing I was expecting vitriol at an anti-Kaine ad...........the total opposite - there wasn't a soul sitting there that will vote for the man - they were all Kilgore supporters or just anti-Kaine'rs.

Made me feel a bit better about the Shore attitude for the first time in a while.

Will Kaine use video from Sept. 13 event in TV ad, Kilgore asks

Jerry W. Kilgore, the Republican nominee for governor, is asking a hypothetical question about a hypothetical question.

Supposedly the survey was on SurveySpot.com. I'm a member there, but I couldn't get to it. Either I don't have the right profile or they've pulled it already.

McDonnell ad assails Deeds on abuse cases
The Democrat rejects criticism of how he handled the charges
by Michael Hardy
Republican attorney general candidate Robert F. McDonnell yesterday launched a television advertisement that blistered his Democratic foe's allegedly lenient handling of three child sex-abuse cases about 15 years ago.

I saw the ad this morning. It's pretty strong. I don't think I've seen any ads from Deeds.
