Last Week's Thread:

Virginia Campaign News - Monday, September 19 - Thread XXIV - Avast Ye Scurvy Scum

From the RTD:

Jeffy's Blog

From Sunday:

Analyst: low marks to rivals' campaigns
On main candidates, he cites a lack of 'a sharply focused issue'
by Jim Mason
So far, this fall's campaign by Virginia's two major-party candidates for governor has been more about posturing than inspiring voters' interest.

Narrow money gap suggests tight House races
Closest fundraising contest in Shenandoah Valley; only $1,455 separates candidates
by Pamela Stallsmith
Some of the most competitive House races this fall are virtually tied in fundraising, underscoring the high-stakes nature of the election as Republicans and Democrats compete to boost their numbers.

Democrats may gain in House
Analysts predict more seats won in fall election; governor's race likely to affect delegate results
by Tyler Whitley
Democrats, who broke a long losing streak by picking up three House of Delegates seats in 2003 and a fourth in a special election, may be poised to gain more seats this fall, political observers say.

I know this liberal who goes to Georgetown and i love how he runs around talking about how the democrat party needs to veer left in order to win elections and is a big kaine supporter yet looks the other way when his guy has to run around pretending hes a republican in order to win.

That article on the Dems picking up seats in the House of Delegates is bunk. There is a great analysis on this web site (the latest numbers are in this posting.) http://notlarrysabato.typepad.com/doh/2005/09/10th_district_p.html

The Kaine people had a big orange and blue sign at the entrance to Lane stadium at Virginia Tech on Saturday stating, "KILGORE IS A WAHOO". It was nice they mentioned Jerry's name for us since the College Republicans were no where to be seen. Hope they're gearing up for the next game!

Virginia's Disgrace
Editorial
This year Virginia will elect not only its three statewide officials but also 100 members of the House of Delegates. Regarding the House, "elect" may be too strong a word. Thanks to gerrymandering and partisan timidity only a handful of districts offer legitimate competition.

Every time I hear the name “Affleck”, I think of insurance – not some Hollywood actor. I Googled his name for a list of credits and now know why I don’t recognize his name – with the exception of Pearl Harbor, in which he had a very minor role – I haven’t seen any of the movies.
I guess if I want to be politically aware in the modern sense I’ll have to start going to movies.

What do you think of the latest Rasmussen poll - http://www.rasmussenreports.com/2005/Virginia%20Governor_September%2030.htm ? It shows a 45-45 tie with Potts getting 5.

Don't know if it's been posted, but the NRA endorsed Deeds for AG. Of course, they also endorsed Kilgore and Bolling. VCDL didn't endorse anyone for Governor (since Kilgore won't return the survey), Bolling for LG, and no one for AG. They said both AG candidates were pro-gun.

Unfortunately, I think it's probably pretty accurate.

The NRA endorsement is mentioned in the article above, along with the fact that the FOP endorsed Kilgore.

I had hoped we'd be way ahead by now. Looks like it's going to come down to the wire. My blood pressure doesn't need this.

"I had hoped we'd be way ahead by now. Looks like it's going to come down to the wire."

It does appear to be close.

You obviously have a lot more political experience than I, so maybe you can tell me why the heck Repoublicans and/or Kilgore are doing some of the things they're doing that appear to me to be a waste of time and money?

The first is the item posted at the top about the phone calls questioning registration. A friend of mine got one of these calls. He's perfectly legally registered to vote where he lives. All the call did was irritate the heck out of him because it suggested the caller had some info that he wasn't properly registered.

Second is the attack about highway funds being spent late. Virginia roads still need a lot of work but it seems pretty obvious that VDOT is in a lot better shape than it ever was under Gilmore and probably under Allen as well. Even Kilgore's spokesman in the story admits that Warner's transportation guy made a lot of improvements. And the attack containbed no specifics that I've seen So why spend time and money pointing out something that Warner actually improved?

And what's with the NRA endorsing Deeds? Deeds is good on gun issues, but I'd think the NRA would want all Republicans in office, especially since AG is sometimes the stepping stone to the governor's office.

I can't tell you, but I can tell you I'm asking the same questions.

As for the endorsement of Deeds, you didn't hear it from me, but he's got the better record on gun issues.

NOTE: During these walks, we go out in teams and make personal contacts with voters. We have a script to follow with 5 quick questions to ask while at the door (who they plan on supporting for Governor / Delegate, whether they consider themselves a Republican or Democrat etc.) We provide homes with information on the Republican Candidates running for office in their area, so they can stay informed and get involved! We find that when knocking on doors, voters tend to be extremely receptive! This is not an intimidating exercise; in fact, it is very fun and effective!!!! Please look at the list below, and RSVP accordingly to one of our walks. As we will be all over the County on Saturday, there is definitely something to do close to home!! Remember, these walks are Rain or Shine – we are too close to Election Day to let a little bad weather come between us and victory!

Corin,

I too am wondering why it seems the Kilgore team is doing its best to alienate its base. The following article from the Washington Times shows that Kilgore is either unaware of the influence of the VCDL or just doesn't care. Given that it is anyones's race right now, I don't think that they can afford to discount anyone.

I will tell you that in light of the references in this article and the Kilgore team's indifference to the VCDL (THE most effective gun lobby in Virginia) there is an effort to write in the name of VCDL president Phillip VanCleave in protest. This has the potential of stripping 7,000 (worse case) votes from the Kilgore ticket. If the turnout is light, as everyone expects it will be, it may very well influence the outcome.

Everyone I've talked to about this knows, and doesn't care whether it means a governor Kaine or not. They are just really tired of being taken for granted, and being run over roughshod.
