Virginia Campaign News - Monday, August 8

Nicely done.

From today's RTD...

Kilgore, Potts agree on mandates
But 2 candidates differ on most other issues in remarks before officials
by Tyler Whitley
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Republican gubernatorial candidate Jerry W. Kilgore and state Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. agreed yesterday that the state should not impose any more unfunded mandates on local governments. But they differed on just about everything else.

Helloooo!
Editorial
Are Virginia Republicans boneheads?

I gotta say, I agree.

Goodnight Irene...

True.

But I did go ahead and send him an email letting him know I was disappointed.

Yea i was looking closer at the article and he did mention that he would have met with her weeks ago before this hoopla started and not right now so while the statement was a little dumb i think its being misinterpreted.

Good point. But we'd never get it across on that thread.

Maybye before i head off to work i'll give it a shot, but i doubt itd be much use. I can just see all his bashers running with it and trying to beat him over the head with it. Nobody seems to care about MCCain's consistently ridiculous statements, or Condi's consisteng pushing for the Gaza withdrawl and general anti isreal comments, or Pawlenty defying the FDA and reimporting drugs, or Brownback's borderline kooky statements on abortion that don't help our cause, or Huckabee's consistent statements on our christian duty to help illegal aliens, or Santorums jiggling to the left every time hes up for reelection.

I have to remember also that it's still a long way off for most people. Allen has to get reelected next year first.

And a lot of things will shift and change between now and the actual begin of the 08 primary cycle.

As much as I wish he hadn't said it, only the people that already hate him will remember this anyway.

Cindy Sheehan has used about 14 minutes of her 15 minutes of fame.

That is true it is a long way off but it was the blogosphere that started floating his name around as a contender and it needs to keep floating it if hes to have a shot in the primaries. Most blogosphere and washington insider polls have him leading but national polls don't becuase he lacks name recognition, you can bet even when allen rebounds and does something good these same people will be all over that thread bashing it into our skulls that he wanted bush to meet with cindy sheehan.

I agree with you boththat it's a long way off, and we need to get him re-elected next year...but he sure isn't going to be getting any votes for next year hanging out in Biden territory:

Del. an early test for 2008: Va. senator to stump at Trap Pond

DOVER — Sen. Joseph R. Biden, D-Del., and Sen. George Allen, R-Va., share more than space on the second floor of the Senate's Russell Office Building in Washington.

Both men earn frequent mention as presidential candidates for their respective parties, but neither has formally declared himself in the running.

Today, Sen. Allen will appear at Sussex County Councilman Vance Phillips' annual crab and watermelon feast at Cypress Point on Trap Pond near Laurel. Sen. Allen is expected to arrive at 6 p.m.

[snip]

Sen. Allen's father, legendary football coach George Allen, led the Washington Redskins to their first Super Bowl appearance and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The cowboy-boot-wearing, tobacco-chewing politician has conservative credentials that Republican strategists want to see on a national stage..

He should fit in well at the Laurel crab feast and maybe earn some backing that could help in the First State's presidential primary, which will be held in early February 2008 during the first batch of primaries after New Hampshire's..

"Delaware has an early primary that gets some national attention," said William Swain Lee, chairman of the Sussex County Republican Party and the GOP's 2004 gubernatorial candidate..

"The party organization is really good at putting on events and we think partially because of our proximity to Washington, we are going to see a number of front-line candidates coming to Delaware.".

During his just-completed annual listening tour of Virginia, in which he crosses the state in a mobile home, the Associated Press reported Sen. Allen heard lots of calls to seek the White House..

The senator says he is focused on re-electing Republicans in Virginia this year..

With the commonwealth's elections this year for state offices, Sen. Allen said he is raising money for his re-election campaign in other states so he won't draw financial support from other GOP Old Dominion candidates..

"We have a lot of requests for appearances and when we are out traveling we always try to go to a party-building event or a help-another-Republican event," said Jason Phillips, a spokesman for Sen. Allen's re-election campaign..

Sen. Allen could be the first of several possible presidential candidates to visit Delaware before the state's primary..

Even though it's not really that far from me, my lack of mobility (still on crutches) doesn't permit me to go traipsing around state parks.

Not to worry Gabz. He's been here plenty and he'll be here all he needs to next year.

He really has to play it careful not to overshadow the Governor's race. If he spends too much time this year in Virginia, particularly fundraising, then the news gets to be the Allen/Warner comparisons.

Like I said earlier, the best thing we can do for George Allen in Virginia is to get Jerry Kilgore elected.
