Kilgore refuses to debate Potts
Says he and Kaine should debate, as 'candidates that can actually win' the race
by Jeffy Schapiro
Jerry W. Kilgore, the Republican nominee for governor, said yesterday he is willing to face Democrat Timothy M. Kaine in organized debates, but not independent H. Russell Potts Jr.
There's more, but you get the point...
further down in the article...
Kaine has said he is opposed to the death penalty on religious grounds but would uphold the law of Virginia.
and...
Kaine, who is a Catholic, says he has a faith-based opposition to abortion but will enforce Virginia's laws.
I know any real comment on this would backfire as "attacking" Kaine because he's Catholic. But could he be anymore two-faced? Is his faith important or is it not? Does he have values or does he not?
I think we know the answers.
There is a way to comment/question without appearing to be attacking him because he is Catholic.................The oath of office requires upholding the laws of the Commonwealth - but it does not prevent the one taking it from working to change the laws...so the question is since he is opposed to abortion on religious grounds will he push for changes in the laws of the commonwealth.
I do not consider the dealth penalty in the same category as abortion and find those who try to lump them together disengenuous.
(I was raised Catholic, so I don't have to worry about coming across as anti-Catholic :) )
Yes, but he's already squealed like a stuck pig when it's been mentioned before. And the mediots will play that up.
I don't think Kilgore can mention it. But I wish someone would challenge him.
Maybe that's me. ;-)
Like many of our esteemed politicians, he wants to stand firm on all sides on the issues.
I don't see how asking such a question could be construed as attacking his faith.........if he is so steadfast in his faith he should welcome the opportunity to work to change those laws that are in conflict with his faith - shouldn't he?
Well, certainly not by any reasonably literate rational person. Unfortunately, that description doesn't fit the lamestream media.
Sad, but true.
Well, I've been contacted by a new GOP staffer in Richmond to join the "Catholics for Kilgore" coalition. We Catholics will take care of our Little Timmy problem ourselves.
Two things about Kaine's claims.
1. The Catholic Church DOES NOT have a 100% ban on the death penalty. There are exceptions where the Church does believe that it is permissible.
2. The Catholic Church DOES have a 100% ban on abortion.
On the second point, Pope Benedict XVI, just last year when he was Cardinal, issued a letter to all Catholic Bishops in America regarding Catholic politicians who support abortion. That is the little letter Cardinal McCarrick of D.C. didn't release the text of and soft-peddled it where individual bishops could decide whether to deny Communion to the pro-choice pols. When the actual letter came out, there was no wiggle room there. The bishops were required to deny them Communion.
Little Timmy's position of "I'm personally opposed to it, but I'll uphold the current laws" doesn't fly. Let's just say that I got the text of Cardinal Ratzinger's letter into the hands of Kilgore's campaign manager. Little Timmy is going to have to decide which is more important to him, his faith (thus requiring him to take a pro-life stand if he wants to continue receiving Communion) or his liberal constituency........
You explained the 2 points I was trying to make much better than I did.
It is a fact that in 2001 Tim Kaine ran as a pro-choice candidate. He wiggled and squirmed but was finally pinned downed. There used to be some stuff on the web about it but it seems to have disappeared.
The Catholic Church has always recognized the right of the state to impose the death penalty.
Tim Kaine was advertised as the guest auctioneer at the Richmond Peace Education Center fundraiser in November. Whether or not he actually showed up, it was a dangerous invitation to accept especially as he was already running for Governor.
That organization can be seen at every anti-war event in the area as well as the protests in front of the Federal Building downtown on Fridays. The leadership of RPEC includes employees of the Diocese of Richmond Office of Justice and Peace, an anarachist or two and a writer for Workers World (insert hammer & sickle here).
From 1981 until recently RPEC was given rent free office space by the now retired Bishop Sullivan. I don't know who is paying their rent now. I pray it is not the Catholic Church to which I tithe.
Very interesting information.
Sorting Out Virginia Gubernatorial Candidate Views on Abortion
National Black MBA Association DC Chapter 11/02/2001 Announcement
Democrat Timothy M. Kaine is campaigning throughout Virginia with a banner that reads: "Issue #1: Education" Kaine, 43, is a Harvard-trained civil rights lawyer, who, until he resigned to run this year, was the mayor of Richmond. Kaine stresses his support for the get-tough-on-gun-crime program in Richmond. He supports the abolition of parole but opposes capital punishment. Kaine opposes efforts to restrict abortions, even the 24-hour waiting period, saying people share "honest differences" over the issue. He took a year off while attending Harvard Law School to volunteer at a mission in Honduras. Kaine has taken on a wide range of civil rights cases, from death penalty defenses to fair housing actions. Timothy and Anne Kaine have three children.

HERNDON -- Democratic Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine yesterday pinpointed transportation as his top priority should he be elected Virginia's next governor, and he outlined a broad four-point plan to solve the state's transit woes.
Kaine and Kilgore agree to 2nd debate
The gubernatorial campaigns of Republican Jerry W. Kilgore and Democrat Timothy M. Kaine have agreed to a second debate. The hourlong debate on Sept. 13 will be moderated by Tim Russert, Washington bureau chief for NBC News and moderator of "Meet the Press."
