Sunday
Money flows for Kaine, Kilgore
Quest to become next governor is costing a chunk of change
by Pamela Stallsmith
Democrat Timothy M. Kaine and Republican Jerry W. Kilgore are raising record amounts of money in their gubernatorial quests, but they're also spending huge chunks of it.

Corin's comment: Remember that a HUGE chunk of Timmy's change came from the Scream Machine (DNC). To help Jerry out go to Jerry Kilgore for Governor.

Also from Sunday
GOP candidates for No. 2 office debate
by Pamela Stallsmith
The two Republicans vying for their party's lieutenant governor nomination sparred in a feisty debate Friday night over taxes and the role of state government.

State Sen. Bill Bolling of Hanover County depicted himself as the true anti-tax conservative who would protect Virginia's families and said he is the candidate with a proven record, pointing out how he voted against last year's $1.4 billion tax increases.

Sean T. Connaughton, chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, said his experience as leader of the state's third-largest jurisdiction gives him the needed background to tackle the many challenges facing Virginia.

Today's RTD Editorial
A Kaine Mutiny?
As a gubernatorial candidate, Tim Kaine says he opposes the death penalty because of his religious beliefs -- because of his abiding Catholic faith. But that's not exactly what he said during his 2001 nomination fight.

A related thread that I wish really wasn't.

Confederacy of the determined - (Southern heritage buffs vow "Confederate History Month")
Southern heritage buffs vow to use the Virginia gubernatorial election as a platform for designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.

Gee, where are the Loyalists to complain about the abuses they took during and after the revolutionary war? Loyalist History Month, featuring tarring and feathering demonstrations, property confiscations in lieu of having a real currency or tax structure, etc. The time has come to right this wrong....

From today's RTD:

One spot features his family and the second his tax-reduction plan

by Jeff Schapiro
Democrat Timothy M. Kaine yesterday aired the first television commercials of the 2005 governor's race: a biographical spot featuring his children and another highlighting his plan to trim homeowner taxes.

Campaign Spot Watch: Timothy M. Kaine
Kaine and his wife, Anne Holton, with their two sons and daughter. Kaine and Holton unload a camper; Kaine tosses a football with one of the boys. Holton, a juvenile and domestic relations district court judge in Richmond, is prohibited by judicial ethics rules from participating in election campaigns. She received approval to appear in the ad, as long as she doesn't speak.

Will Miz Holton speak if she's First Lady?

Campaign Spot Watch: Timothy M. Kaine "As a homeowner, I know how much property taxes are going up. Wherever you live in Virginia. Whatever type of home you own. However much your taxes have risen. I want to cut homeowner taxes up to 20 percent and create a tax exemption for home improvements. I cut taxes as mayor of Richmond. As governor, I'll do the same for all Virginians. I'm Tim Kaine. Read my plan to give Virginia homeowners real tax relief."

The tax rate went down. Assessments went up. IIRC WAY up.

From today's RTD:

Voters in primary will pick a party
After they make selections for one party, they won't be able to do so for the other
by Tyler Whitley
Virginians who go to the polls in the June 14 primaries will have to tell a precinct official whether they want to vote Democratic or Republican. They won't be able to do both.

This is a good thing.

Va. Republicans seek waivers of 'No Child' rules (Allen, Goodlatte)
by Peter Hardin
WASHINGTON - Two Virginia Republicans introduced legislation yesterday intended to let Virginia get a broad waiver from key accountability provisions of the No Child Left Behind law, President Bush's education overhaul.

Republican governors group plans to ante up for Kilgore
by Pamela Stallsmith
Gubernatorial candidate Jerry W. Kilgore picked up the endorsement yesterday of the Republican Governors Association, which is forming a political-action committee to raise money for his campaign.

From yesterday:

Kid Stuff: Gubernatorial Race Resembles a Sandbox Spat
by A. Barton Hinkle
Proof that Virginia politicians may not be ready for the big leagues has surfaced recently in the campaign for Governor. First Jerry Kilgore's campaign put out a parodic internal memo purporting to be from the Tim Kaine campaign, depicting the Lieutenant Governor as a flip-flopper. "Consistency is for losers," it read. "Pandering is for governors. And we are creating governors here, folks!" This is not exactly what one would call groundbreaking; it was only last year that President Bush was calling John Kerry a flip-flopper about once every eight seconds.

Okay Mr. Hinkle, let's talk substance. Let's talk about how disingenuous Kaine's "anti-tax" stance is.

From today's Times-Distress

J. Warner now No. 2 in Senate service
He ranks behind only Byrd Sr. in years as senator from Virginia
by Peter Hardin
WASHINGTON -- John W. Warner, Virginia's senior senator, today passes a milestone toward becoming really senior -- at least in a historical sense.

The fifth-term Republican is now the second-longest serving of the 51 men who have served as U.S. senators from Virginia, according to Warner's staff.

Corin's note: We've known Jawn was "No. 2" for a long time. (the reference is to Harry F. Byrd Sr., not Sheets)

Potts berates rivals as 'two kids in a sandbox'
by Jeff Schapiro
State Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr., running for governor as an independent, said yesterday his presumed Democratic and Republican opponents are "like two kids in a sandbox."

Allen's presidential chances rated high
Poll of D.C. insiders says he has best chance in GOP; Warner 3rd for Democrats
by Tyler Whitley
U.S. Sen. George Allen, R-Va., has the best chance of capturing the Republican nomination for President in 2008, according to a political magazine's poll of Washington "insiders."
