Other possible candidates include ex-Lt. Gov. Walter Bradley, ex-state Rep. John Sanchez, and state Rep. Dan Finley.

Why did he switch? Has he always been a conservative D, or is this some kinda trick?
This guy seems to make lost-in-election as his hobby.

An even better question than why he switched is "can he win"? Even if he is a good conservative, I'd like to know whether he can do well against an entrenched incumbent such as Bingaman---at least former state Rep. John Sanchez is already known statewide from the 2002 gubernatorial race. I'm still hoping that Bingaman will retire and that Congresswoman Wilson will be able to capture the open Senate seat (and allow John Sanchez to win in her Albuquerque-based House seat), but the article didn't even hint at the possibility of a retirement, so perhaps the talk has died down already.
I'm intrigued by the possibility of Walter Bradley, who has some residual name I.D. from having held statewide office. He lost the 2002 Gubenatorial primary because Bill Richardson was seen as an enivitable winner and party insiders thought that John Sanchez might cut into the Hispanic vote. But Sanchez didn't run a particularly good campaign.
Jeff Bingaman will be 65 y/o in 2006, not especially old by Senate standards. Absent his retirement, this is an outside chance at best.
Bingaman announced he's running again.
