Interesting. He could get some crossover votes.

Why did he switch? Has he always been a conservative D, or is this some kinda trick?

An even better question than why he switched is "can he win"? Even if he is a good conservative, I'd like to know whether he can do well against an entrenched incumbent such as Bingaman---at least former state Rep. John Sanchez is already known statewide from the 2002 gubernatorial race. I'm still hoping that Bingaman will retire and that Congresswoman Wilson will be able to capture the open Senate seat (and allow John Sanchez to win in her Albuquerque-based House seat), but the article didn't even hint at the possibility of a retirement, so perhaps the talk has died down already.
