Democrat in G.O.P. Clothing?
Winston-Salem, NC - On Monday, Republican COngressional candidate Ed Powell criticized Jay Helvey for having Erskine Bowles's Finance Committee Chairman, Scott Livengood, as the chairman of the Helvey for Congress campaign.
"This is proof-positive of what i suspected all along: Winston-Salem's downtown Democrats aretrying to hijack the Republican Primary with their man, Jay Helvey," Powell said. "It is beyond hypocritical for Helvey to praise Congressman Burr on the campaign trail and then have Erkine Bowles's biggest supporter in the Fifth District as his campaign chairman."
Livengood's history with Erskine Bowles is a long one. Livengood contributed $2,000 to Bowles effort to defeat Elizabeth Dole in 2002, and after Bowles lost, Livengood placed Erskine Bowles on the Board of Directors of Krispy Kreme. Prior to joining the Helvey team, Livengood had no record of involvement with Republican candidates in North Carolina.
"I am not going to stand back and watch the Liberal Democrats and pretend Republicans try to steal the Fifth District Congressional District," Powell added. "They know they can't win the race with a Democrat so they have to try to steal it with Helvey. I am calling on all the good Republicans across this District to stand up with me and keep Helvey and the Democrats from Stealing this election."

JohnnyZ,
Obviously you are a Helvey supporter, but your reasons are that "He's a great guy...His staffers are hardcore Republicans". This leaves your only real reason for supporting Helvey the candidate being that "He's a great guy". I am sure that many of the candidates are "great people", but I'm also sure that not many of them have led their companies into bankruptcy -- www.jayhelvey.com.
On another note--Ed Powell's campaign is not a joke. Money, especially the $$$ from New York bankers that Helvey has raised, isn't always indicative of support. If you are supporting Helvey on what he seems to be running on - "Tremenedous International Business Experience" - you are supporting a candidate who is running on false statements. In no way does bankrupting a company translate into a hefty business background. Sure, Helvey is well-funded...that's it. Compare Ed Powell's biography to that of Jay Helvey.

Powell is heads and shoulders above Helvey as far as being qualified to run for the 5th District Congressional seat.
Foxx, Robinson, Powell, and Broyhill are all great, conservative Republicans. Helvey's campaign chairman helped Bowles try to defeat Sen. Dole just last year! How can Helvey claim to be such a "great conservative leader" when he has these same people chairing his campaign? To answer your question--no, Krispy Kreme is not a Democratic corporation, but their CEO is an avid supporter of Bowles who's running against a true, great Republican N.C. political leader in Richard Burr.
