I know several Democrats who are trying to downplay the gravity of this event, citing his DINO-esque voting record in saying it's no big surprise, even that it was inevitable and no big loss.

I told them that regardless of his relative conservatism, it's a big deal when a sitting Senator endorses for President the other party's candidate. But they're in denial.

Anyone know past examples of this?

The most recent example I have read of this was U.S. Senator Frank Lausche (D-Ohio), a conservative who endorsed Richard Nixon back in 1968. Laushce had already been defeated in the 'Rat primary that year by liberal ex-Congressman John Gilligan. Still, it contirbuted to Hubert Humphrey's narrow loss in Ohio that year.

I wish more Senators had the integrity and conviction of Zell Miller.

I think Zell does more damage as a Democrat disgusted with his party than as a Republican. His criticism is considered more objective and trustworthy than if it were to come from a Republican. Interestingly, whenever the media observes McCain oppose Bush, they hail him as a free-thinking independent and it makes headlines. The liberal media has attempted to whitewash the embarassment of Zell bashing the national Democratic party and endorsing Bush. Whenver they do mention him, they try to immediately discredit him by saying that's its expected since he's a conservative Democrat and usually votes with Bush anyway.
