Wag the Dog didn't need to be rushed into the theaters quickly. I saw it with liberal friends on my birthday, and precisely a week later, the world discovered the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Suddenly what the week before had been a movie version of a strange novel became a cinematic premonition.
My list for worst films just grew by one, when I accidentally saw The Boy Friend, a Ken Russell film starring Twiggy. It was despicable, the lowest of the low, truly bad acting on parade.

I'm of the mind that some of the people behind Wag The Dog were quite well aware of what Bill Clinton had been up to. Remember, he opened the White House to Hollywood. Additionally, the Newsweek story had been researched for awhile before an editor killed the story.
The production schedule was something like 6 weeks which to me seems quite short for a film with A-list names.
I don't think that they necessarily wanted to beat the Monica story to the street but I think that they wanted to have a film ready to cash in on the scandal.
