Autumn

Autumn is tapping on my door
Kaleidoscope crisp leaves
Float down from their summer holdings
Demanding attention from passing children
Who pick them up and kick them up

Autumn is teasing my nose
Fresh, cooling air
Gathering the drawing day
And presenting it as a golden sunset
That entertains my every sense

Autumn rattles against autumn
Shiny seeds removed from their spiny cases
Hang on strings
While would be conquerors
Compete in school yards

Autumn changes wardrobes
Summer styles now gone
Cotton replaced by wool
Blocking out a lazy wind
That tries to penetrate our defences

Autumn gathers bountiful delights
Harvest's festival of food
Gathered for celebration
Wheatsheaf loaves with golden mice
Celebrating Mother's nature

That simple haiku
Was the best I could do,
My poetic gene has gone missing.
Try as I might
Seems it's never quite right,
But you know it's the best I am wishing.

The verse may not rhyme,
Is the metre off-time?
No matter, my joy is complete.
And I'll gladly reclaim
My place on this train
In this room where good friends shall meet.

The place where I'll be
Is where I can see,
Over there beyond that green plant,
The coming and going
Of those FRiends knowing
How to do what I know I just can't.

And all should agree
That the place where I'll be
Is mine because it was 'wrote' -
My place on this train
Was assigned during the reign
Of the Belv's vanished hostess, miz cote.
