We are near the end of such a pivotal summer ourselves, the type that defines not just a presidency, but an entire nation for generations to come. After the spectacular victories in Afghanistan and Iraq,
public ardor for the conflict is temporarily cooling.I wonder if it really is? Or if it is just accepted as a fact of life, something that needs to be done. Out on the factopy floor (at least where I work) I've not noticed any "cooling".

Thanks, OhioWFan,
Another great article by Victor Davis Hanson. With him being local to the Fresno area, he is occasionally a guest on the local radio talk shows.
He is a brilliant historian.

By the dog days of August, Grant was no longer the hero of Forts Henry and Donelson or Vicksburg, but had become the "butcher" whose purported obstinacy and brutality had nearly ruined the Army of the Potomac going through men and capital at an unsustainable rate. Oddly enough, a book I read recently showed that Lee had the highest casualty rate of all Civil War generals - 14%. Grant was at slightly less than 12%. So what makes Grant, not Lee, the butcher?

So what makes Grant, not Lee, the butcher? That's easy! The New York Times of course!

WORK? ME? Oh no no no! I tried it once and it's not for me. Oh 10-15 mins. a month, might be ok but anything more than that is a little excessive.

Yes, nice history lesson...But as the story correctly indicates, people have short memories especially when victory has been claimed...That war is over...Cleanup operations are in place and the excitement is gone till the bombs start falling someplace else...
As much as the author would like to keep us focused on the Iraq operation and G Bush's run for another term, I see the focus of Americans changing to Bush's new domestic policy of wide open borders for illegal aliens now coined "undocumented immigrants" and "guest workers"...
They ain't no guests of mine or the millions of American citizens losing their jobs to these criminals...These crooks are likely to elect the next president...That's where my focus is...
So I can understand why the author criticizes articles about toads in the swimming pool...And illegal aliens...He wants us to stay focused on that war and the upcoming election...Some of us aren't that blindly committed to G. Bush or the Party...

Interesting........I've talked with my oil change guy, the pest control lady, a Jewish soccer mom friend, and the car wash proprietor recently......all 'average' folks, and they have all told me how very important it is that we keep at this War on Terror, and how much they respect President Bush for not backing down.
Maybe public support in real places (and not in polls) has NOT waned.....

You fascinate me.
How you could twist this article to make it a soap box for immigration policy is quite remarkable! And yet, I see you one-issue folks do it all the time. Amazing.
