Word For The Day, Tuesday, September 16, 2003: Fastidious
Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online | 09/16/2003 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

fastidious \fass-TIH-dee-uss\ adjective
1. having high and often unpredictable standards
2. showing a meticulous or demanding attitude *

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence: The celebrated imperial Easter eggs designed by goldsmith Peter Carl Faberge are regarded as the ultimate in fastidious workmanship.

Did you know?
There's nothing offensive about fastidious workmanship, and yet the word "fastidious" traces to the Latin noun "fastidium," meaning "disgust." "Fastidium" itself is most likely a combination of the Latin words "fastus," meaning "arrogance," and "taedium," meaning "irksomeness." ("Taedium" also gave us our "tedium.") In keeping with its Latin roots, "fastidious" once meant "haughty" or "scornful" or "disgusting" or "disagreeable," although those uses are now archaic or obsolete. The word then came to be applied to someone who was overly difficult to please or squeamish, and later, to work which reflected a demanding or precise attitude.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School! Class is now in session. The rules are simple, you get a grade if you use the WFTD in a sentence, haiku, limerick, or quatrain. You get a "+" if you make a link, or make the teacher laugh, or you offer the appropriate bribes. Here's the deal: I'm not acting as a substitute teacher, merely opening the door so you can enter the classroom so you don't disturb the other classes with your unruly behavior in the hall. Try to behave until the teacher arrives.

Also, due to concerns about grade inflation, Miss Rika has locked the gradebook away, so xsmommy only has the whip and chair today.

Here is my example with WFTD.

Perhaps, the audience was more fastidious (1) than expected in its sense of humor, but "comedian" Sam Walters failed to win them over with his patriotic painted penis.

fastidiousness usually accompanies fruitiness.... so it would be an EPISCOPAL bishop's trait, you might say.... ; )

perhaps a little more fastituousness on your part, teach, and some of us who have been waiting patiently by the door wouldn't have almost got drenched by XS's hurricane!

i am going to be quizzing class members on the level of fastidiousness that they use in airport restrooms at lunchtime today. Is your peepee cleaner than your hands? that is the FOXNEWS question of the day....
