Word For The Day, Tuesday, September 16, 2003: Fastidious
Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online | 09/16/2003 | The Janitor

Posted on 09/16/2003 7:44:20 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

fastidious \fass-TIH-dee-uss\ adjective
1. having high and often unpredictable standards
2. showing a meticulous or demanding attitude *

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence: The celebrated imperial Easter eggs designed by goldsmith Peter Carl Faberge are regarded as the ultimate in fastidious workmanship.

Did you know?
There's nothing offensive about fastidious workmanship, and yet the word "fastidious" traces to the Latin noun "fastidium," meaning "disgust." "Fastidium" itself is most likely a combination of the Latin words "fastus," meaning "arrogance," and "taedium," meaning "irksomeness." ("Taedium" also gave us our "tedium.") In keeping with its Latin roots, "fastidious" once meant "haughty" or "scornful" or "disgusting" or "disagreeable," although those uses are now archaic or obsolete. The word then came to be applied to someone who was overly difficult to please or squeamish, and later, to work which reflected a demanding or precise attitude.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Some folks here may be too fastidious to read this article about Hip Hop (which I gather is supposed to be some kind of music), but for them, from that article, here's the funniest line I've seen for awhile:

I could be wrong, but "Pimp Juice" does not sound to me like something that you want to put in your mouth.

"an automatic go to heaven because of having more than six children"

Huh! I never heard of that! But it explains my mom's push to pump out puppies 'til the well ran dry. She probably knew of the 6 kid rule. Certainly she believed that a son entering the priesthood guarenteed heaven for the ma. That didn't work for her either, although my two oldest brothers did tease her by going to the seminary.

I can't believe I'm going to write this -- sorry in advance.

Do you carry your money in a sock? Sock it to me, baby. LOL!

For instance, Target sells underpants depicting Scooby-Doo and Spongebob Squarepants in adult sizes. If that's not enough, there's also "fuzzy pajamas with attached feet."

Am I missing something? I think Scooby-Doo unders are cute. And fuzzy pajamas with attached feet would probably do very well in cold weather. Heck, you have to go naked around here to stay cool. 110 yesterday. I'm not watching the weather. I'm not watching the weather.

My mom pushed out the first nine singly. After the twins were born, she and my dad glued that dime between her knees.

I get those unders for the 'bot. I shouldn't say too much in here about that. He wears them as pajamas. There are Spider Man ones, too. LOL!

So you get overheated in clothing the same as I do at night. Hmmmmm! Clothing is just so restrictive sometimes. LOL!
