Freeper Tech Experts Review File Sharing.

Posted on 08/31/2003 2:46:26 PM PDT by ConservativeMan55

I'd like to review all methods of sharing files online. Rating them by Security, Speed, Accuracy, Availability, and Selection.

I've always used Kazza. I've used it for years. It was one of the best ways to download music, software, games, movies, videos, etc.

It had a decent selection of music. Especially if the music was new. If the music was new then you could almost always find it there.

Speed of this type of file sharing software depended on the person downloading, and the person being downloaded from.

Unforunately Kazza has been a target of the RIAA and siince it doesn't have a central place where everything is download its hard to shut them down.

The RIAA and the Courts went after individual downloaders in an attempt to stop the file sharing. I believe many people still have Kazza and are still using it. I deleted Kazza and stop sharing files days before the deadline the RIAA gave to stop sharing music.

Imesh I'm not too sure about. I believe it has many of the same features that Kazza had, but it is very loosely organized making it even harder to shut down.

Speed once again depends on the person downloading and the person being downloaded from. Here are the other great features from Imesh.

Incedentally I am behind a Router now so it wouldn't matter if I downloaded songs all day long. They couldn't match my Ping address.

Advanced Search for all types of media files (Audio, Video, Games, Software, Photos and more).

Multi-lingual support.

Very fast downloads from multiple users simultaneously.

Automatic resume feature that assures the completion of all your requested downloads.

Ability to access and view your friends’ shared files.

A Media Player with play lists and full-screen preview mode.

Enhanced Media Manager ideally designed for organizing all your PC’s media files.

Links to your favorite Songs, Lyrics, Movies, Radio Stations, CD Covers and weekly Featured Artists.

Advanced media filter that prevents access to offensive files and viruses.

Ability to chat with your friends while downloading.

The most friendly and intuitive user interface.

Bandwidth control.

Please list your favorite file sharing software and the advantages and disadvantages of using it.

Kazaa lite is v. good but the usual places to download it have been killed off. There was a great Netherlands site and now it's gone. There's a German (de) site which has a pop up when you want to download it. I don't know what the pop up is saying

Latest greatest kazaa lite version 2.41 k+++ can be downloaded via the Kazaalite program

I'm old fashioned and not really into high-tech, but my neighborhood friends and I have developed a really great way to share books and literature. Each of us installs a new door on his house with no locks and no keys. That way we can go right into each other's houses at any time and swap the materials from our libraries. Neat, huh?

It's supposed to have new protections against RIAA. I set it up to thwart RIAA but don'y know if these protection will do the trick.

I used to leave KazaaLite on. Now I download and scoot

I downloaded Imesh this afternoon and have downloaded one song.

I keep disabling the option to allow other users to download songs from me, but it keeps coming back on.

I like LimeWire and BearShare but I am not certain of their security.

The full Kazaa ("Media Desktop") installs no fewer than 75 separate and distinct spyware and malware elements on your PC. (Trust me and ad-aware for the count). It will not run once you remove the offending spyware.
