Another one is John F. Kennedy, Jr., editor of the failing George magazine, failed bar exam twice, crashed his plane killing him, his wife and sister-in-law. Never served in any political office. Millions of taxpayer dollars were spent to find the plane, millions of taxpayer dollars spent bringing his body to the surface and millions of taxpayer dollars spent taking his surviving family out to sea to blow out his ashes over the ocean. All this for an ordinary hapless individual who just lucked out and had the word "Kennedy" attached to his name.

OK, I’ve done this before and will repeat it here. This is from memory and I will remember more later. I live in the county with the highest percent of graduate degrees in Texas and one of the wealthiest.

The retired President of BMC Software ($54 million when he left BMC) and his City Councilwoman wife, have a son who is a Marine Captain.

Another City Councilman, a well to do Jewish financial advisor ( former Army), has a son who graduated from Vanderbilt in the spring of 2002 and is now a Navy Ensign.

The doctor who just bought and REBUILT the oldest mansion in the county has an enlisted Marine son.

A friend of mine in his early 30's who is a lawyer and ran for County Attorney a couple of years ago is a Reserve Army Major who spent 9 months in Kosovo.

My wife has a teaching team mate who’s brother is an enlisted Marine, just back from Iraq. His father owns a business and his mother is a manager of a large concern.

A local OB-Gyn has an enlisted son though I do not remember the branch.

The manager of the Country Club nearest me has an enlisted Marine son, also just back from Iraq.

Four of the seven members of my city council are veterans and one is married to a veteran.

One member of my school board is a veteran and three are married to veterans.

The current County Judge had six years in the Navy and the last one was former Army.

I also live on a six house street. We have one retired Coast Guard Officer, three former solders including a Captain who was an Infantry Officer in Vietnam, and one enlisted seaman.

...just lucked out...

I think those of us who didn't "luck out" are the lucky ones! :)

I do too. "Lucked out" was bad phrasing. Should have said "misfortune" instead. Well, "misfortune" isn't good either because that seems to perpetuate the so-called "Kennedy Curse" like something is so special that it's supernatural. Mainstream media and liberals just love that because of increased publicity. Getting wrapped up in my thoughts while typing them tend to use not so accurate phrasing. How about "accident?"

How does one get to 'chat'? I've searched over the main menu, but couldn't find it (I got back to this thread through 'my comments').

"Don't forget GHW Bush; the youngest Naval flyer in WWII."

I am sorry, I did forget him. And I guess we should remember John Kerry too, as bad as he got later, and is now, I guess he was pretty brave then. And the other Kerry, the one who was the governor of Nebraska, no?, who's now the pres. of the New School, I remembered his name until John started running for pres, is it Edward? Edwin? There are many, many others.

My dad wasn't rich or famous, but he was in the Navy, likewise my grandfather (german born), my brother-in-law (his wife says it "saved his life"), my cousin-in-law (he's a real right-winger, and became a doctor too), my aunt was a WAVE, and my uncle was in the Army.

You could never pay anyone enough money to be in Military service, or be a police officer or fire fighter (I'll just be politcally correct now for one second, because I do want to include the women who serve) all one can do to make their jobs worth it is give them the R E S P E C T they deserve.

"Don't forget GHW Bush; the youngest Naval flyer in WWII."

George Bush 41 completed a bombing mission while he was ON FIRE and was awarded a medal for his heroism. Can't remember whether it was the Silver Star or the Navy Cross.

Lyndon Johnson got a Silver Star for being a REMF in WWII. John McCain received numerous medals for spilling his guts to the North Vietnamese. Charges were preferred but dropped because his daddy was a senator.

Silver Star or the Navy Cross.

Neither, it was the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Than you for taking your time to respond to this.

I'm certain that I heard some Senators talking during a session on cspan2 AND they were asking each about some of their own kids that were deployed to Iraq. I just can't remember the names. One of the first names of one of the Senators' kids was "Brook" or "Brooke."

Let's not forget Bob Dole and Strom Thurmond, both decorated WWII vets.

To the best of my knowledge, Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) is the only member of Congress with a son deployed to Iraq.

How does one get to 'chat'? I've searched over the main menu, but couldn't find it (I got back to this thread through 'my comments').

It's the link "General Interest" which is right above "News/Activism" in the "My Forums" section on the right hand side of the browse page. Being unable to find this so-called Chat is a common problem. Many, if not most people don't know its there.

WARNING: once you go to Chat/General Interest, you have to then hit "News/Activism" to get back to the good stuff.

Many, if not most people don't know its [Chat] there.

As evidenced, and as I predicted, by the paucity of posts once this thread was moved to "Chat."

When Ronaldus Maximus was president, his Attorney General was Ed Meese. In 1987 I met Ed Meese's son, who at that time was a Captain in the U.S. Army.

Than you for taking your time to respond to this.

It may interest you to know (see my post 22)that I saw the father of the Vanderbilt grad / Navy Ensign this weekend. His son has just been assigned to the Kitty Hawk. I also forgot to tell you that in basic training his room mate was Andy Ashcroft, son of the U S Atty General.
