SURVIVOR 7: PEARL ISLAND
14 Aug, 2003 | Cuz_it_aint_their_money

ARRRGGGHHHHHHH!
AVAST Me Mateys!
Shiver me timbers & Blow Me Down!
All hands on deck!
Heave to & strike the mainsail!
This here's Captain Cuz bringing you scurvy scallywags the latest in Survivor news!
ARRRGGGHHHHHHHH!

Well ping-ees, it’s that time again!
Mark Burnett Productions has once again permitted 16 media whores to ply their trade just to bring us a few hours of blissful enjoyment. So without further ado, here is what your intrepid Captain Cuz has come up with so far.

During the final show of Survivor 6: The Amazon, Jeff Probst provided the following voice over for the first Survivor 7: Pearl Island Promo:

This Fall, 16 new Survivors journey off the coast of Panama, to a land steeped in a bloody history of piracy.

A hidden chain of more than a hundred tropical islands, located in the blue-green waters of Central America. These are the PEARL ISLANDS. It is a place of ancient riches, with a turbulent history of looting and plundering. The ruins of Spanish forts and sunken ships are monuments to a violent and infamous past, where the deeds of pirates like Drake and Morgan are legendary.

In these Panamanian waters lurk some of the most exotic and dangerous marine animals anywhere in the Pacific Ocean. Schools of sharks, sting rays, dolphins and sea turtles thrive in a spectacular world beneath the sea.

And our Survivors will begin their adventure during the migration of the humpback whale. For the first time, each tribe will have its own island and the marooning will be unlike anything experienced by the previous Survivors.

Who will outwit, outplay and outlast all the others to become the sole Survivor? Find out this Fall as the adventure continues in the Pearl Islands.

Well, you just knew that with all the Survivor Junkies out there in Webland, it wouldn’t be long before someone came up with some pictures about the Pearl Islands, and here are a few I have selected from the many out there in cyberspace: Photos courtesy of claycritters.com

Here is a brief “History of the Pearl Islands” – (an excerpt from SurvivorFever.net)
These islands have a long history as they were the first islands to be explored by Spanish Conquistadors. In fact the most famous conquistador and the person who gave the Pacific Ocean its name, Balboa, lived on these islands after having crossed the Panamanian Isthmus. He chose the islands because the weather was cooler and the mosquitoes non-existent.

After Balboa left, the islands were a center for pearl divers and the greatest of pearls, La Peregrina was found off their shores.

La Peregrina was given to Queen Mary Tudor by Philip the II of Spain in 1554; later the pearl ended up in the hands of Napoleon the III and today Elizabeth Taylor has the pearl in her possession. Richard Burton gave it to her as a Valentine's Day gift in 1969. Who knows maybe there are more such pearls to be found? In the 20th century the Pearl islands, especially Contadora were developed into vacation spots for Latin Americans and Europeans.

.

Well intrepid ping-ees, that’s just about all Captain Cuz has for now.
The show will debut Thursday, September 18th, 2003 at 8 PM EDT.
And hopefully, the official Survivor Website will list the contestants sometime next week.
If so, I’ll be back next Thursday with the bios of the players.

Until then, feel free to post your own spoilers!
And remember, don’t take any wooden doubloons! Har Har Har!

P.S. Remember to Freepmail me if you want on or off the Survivor Ping List.

AAARRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! Maties!
Here be what some others be sayin' bout our Survivor!!!

After all that, survival of the counterfeitest!
December 10, 2003
By Phil Rosenthal, Television Critic (Courtesy of the Chicago Sun Times)

How could a "Survivor" this good tumble toward a conclusion this anticlimactic?

Here we are going into Thursday's penultimate episode and Sunday's finale, and we're left with Jon Dalton, Sandra Diaz-Twine, Burton Roberts, Lill Morris and Darrah Johnson as potential champions. The Bay City Rollers were a more satisfying quintet than this.

There's not a rooting interest in the bunch. One of them will win $1 million. The other four won't. And the 20.55 million of us who have, on average, tuned in each week to make CBS' "Survivor: Pearl Islands" television's second most popular series this season, behind only "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," are apt to respond with a shrug.

This arguably has been the best "Survivor" since "The Australian Outback" -- and it would be naive to underestimate executive producer Mark Burnett's boundless capacity for surprises in the three hours still remaining -- yet its finale seems destined to engender the most ambivalence since "Survivor: Thailand." And who remembers "Survivor: Thailand"?

*Two of the final five have lied repeatedly to get ahead. Sandra has been less imaginative and less detestable than Jon (or Johnny Fairplay, as he wants to be known here and in his almost certain future career as a pro-wrestling character). And while that has been fun to watch, it's hard to endorse.

*Two were booted from the competition fair and square only to be returned to contention through the manipulative chicanery of Burnett. For either the physically far superior Burton or Lill the terminally whiny Scout troop leader to come out of this as a winner threatens to taint the whole enterprise because, by almost all rights, they shouldn't be in the chase at all.

*Then there's Darrah the human vapor trail, an utter cipher who, aside from showing she could spell, has tended to appear in the opening credits and virtually vanish till tribal council most weeks. Flying under the radar is one thing. Darrah has burrowed and hid like an albino gopher.

This edition seems destined to be remembered for two players. Besides Johnny Fairplay, the obnoxious "Blue Lagoon" wannabe who lied brilliantly about his grandma dying just for the kick of it, there's Rupert Boneham, the gentle giant straight out of "Harry Potter."

It was Rupert's bear-hug embrace of this season's pirate theme from the very start that really took the show to a new level, and he was sailing along till he inexplicably forgot that being beloved and invaluable inevitably greases your exit. So it was bye-bye Boneham.

Sadly, Jon has played smarter than that. But even those of us who marvel at his unmitigated gall recognize that the only way he gets the money is if he gets into the final two with Lill or Burton and reminds everyone that, well, they don't deserve to be in the game. No matter how rotten this guy is, that's a strategy that works. Still, he's a jerk who makes original "Survivor" winner Richard Hatch look like Mother Teresa.

The only way Burton or Lill wins is if they both make it to the finals, and that's just a terrible outcome. You have to hope that if that happens, Burnett pulls one of his trademark twists out of some orifice and host Jeff Probst stuns everyone with the news that Rupert has been put back in the game at the last minute for some suspect reason or another.

Why not? Burton and Lill's return are proof that sillier things have happened.

Darrah is just as unqualified to win. To become the show's big winner, one should be required to actually be on the show.

That leaves Sandra. She's the least objectionable potential winner. Sure, she twice has told her pals she would vote one way -- most notably, Rupert -- and then double-crossed them. She also hid the fish Rupert had caught after his ouster and then allowed slack-jawed computer programmer Christa Hastie to take the fall.

But each time Jon swears on his dead grandma who isn't dead yet, Sandra's standing improves.

Someone has to win this thing, so it might as well be her. Evil Jon would be a reluctant second choice.

But frankly, having Rupert return from the dead in the final few minutes to wring all their necks, pillage the tribal council set and loot the $1 million prize would be a far more satisfying end than any of that.

AVAST YA MATEYS!
This here be yer Survivor PING from Capt’n Cuz!
Har! Har! Har!

The Pirates Balboa:
Burton, Darrah, Jon, Lillian, Sandra

The Jury:
Ryan O., Rupert, Tijuana, Christa

Gone t’ Davy Jones’ Locker:
Andrew, Michelle, Nicole, Ryan S., Shawn, Trish

Quit in disgrace!
Osten

.

.

.

Heave to ya swabbies! Shiver me timbers n’ strike the mainsail. It’s time for:

CAPT’N CUZ’s WEEKLY WEAKLY SURVIVOR PICKS

The Reward Challenge will probably be a 'superchallenge' involving segments of previous challenges. Some elements shown in preview vidcaps include the 'jail escape' segment, and a target shooting segment involving Slingshots. The Reward is rumored to be a GMC Envoy SUV. Can you say Blatant Sponsor’s Advertisement! Anyway, I think that Burton wins the Reward Challenge. The reward also includes a Bar-B-Q (just like in the Amazon) and he shares the feast with Jonny Jackass, leaving the gals to plot against them.

Also, from the vidcaps, the Immunity Challenge appears to be some sort of walking the plank type challenge utilizing a pole & plank grid pattern set in shallow water. Each Survivor starts at a row of poles. The Survivors need to lower planks (held vertical by lock and chain at each pole) in order to proceed to the next pole and raised plank. The Survivors proceed from one start platform to a finish platform via these planks. The water canteens play a role in this somehow as they are seen carrying the canteen along with them on the planks. I think that Darrah will again pull a “Wigglesworth” and win Immunity.

As far as tonight’s bootee, this player has put up a valiant fight. Even though this player has tried to be “fair and above board” with everyone, even though this player has promised to never vote against one other player (in particular), even thought this player has tried their best to calm rough waters in the tribe, it’s time for this player to have their torch snuffed.

.

.

.

.

AGAIN! Yep, tonight’s bootee is: Burton!

So, there you have it:
Reward Challenge – Burton
Immunity Challenge – Darrah
Bootee – Burton

. .

I’ll be back later with the across the board picks, so till then:
Keep yer powder dry,
yer cutlass razor sharp
and don’t take any wooden doubloons!
Har Har Har!

P.S. Remember to Freepmail me if you want on or off the Survivor Ping List.

Good work on all the updates!

TV Guide (which isn't a bastion of current news) reprints their poll odds of winning:
Burton - 2to1
Jon - 4to1
Lil - 5to2
Sandra - 10to1
Darrah - 10to1

Ratz!

I think Rupert should have been given a special prize for being one of the most useful and likeable guys (along with Rudy from the 1st show)....maybe he'll get some gigs with future Survivor stuff. Hope so because he deserves something. He stands for what most people would appreciate in a team mate. (Which apparently is a weakness on Survivor).

Haha Mom you really had the pot stirred about Burton yesterday.

He is easy on the eyes I'll admit.

Thanks to you people I'll probably enjoy watching this show tonight more than I have in the past. Discussing it is fun after the fact.

Have a great Thursday!

Now that anyone that is remotely good has been voted out, I can just hope that they accidently eat a puffer fish, all die on the island, and Jeff Probst discovers their bloated decaying corpses the next day. (with Lil and johnny fair play half eaten by crabs)

Enough of the mushy stuff, on to the question at hand!
Where is the finale going to be televised from:

From the SurvivorNews.net website:

Back To Reality in Los Angeles
An update on the S7 finale location change story SNN first broke yesterday.
Tuesday, November 18, 2003

The original location for the Survivor finale was the ruins of the Casco Viejo’s Santo Domingo Convent in Panama City. The Convent was burned out by a fire in 1771.

On November 7, 2003 the famous brick and mortar "Arco Chato" (Flat Arch) at the convent suddenly collapsed and was destroyed essentially beyond repair. Two days later Mark Burnett checked out of his hotel on the island of Contadora, and contingency planning no doubt started in earnest.

A national commission has been set up in Panama to investigate what caused the collapse. Among early guesses are seismic activity, humidity, neglect, and nearby construction.

On August 13, an earthquake of 5.3 on the Richter scale occurred in Panama. This caused panic in the capital city, as well as fires, as Panamanians were running around the streets. There were nine significant aftershocks. The August 13 earthquake was also felt in the Pearl Islands by our local spies.

Panama News said that some nearby inhabitants believed loud noises from the centennial celebrations may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

Although no definitive conclusion about why the collapse happened has been reported that we know of, it does seem reasonable that seismic activity was at the root cause.

Ironically Panama was selected for the great canal because of its supposed immunity to earthquakes, compared to neighboring countries. The 325-year-old 15 meter arch was used as "proof" of the seismic stability of Panama.

Survivor hawks the unpredictability of unscripted "real life" drama. With reality game show against the backdrop of historic ruins, history won. The company in charge of doing the finale, Al Berman Productions, apparently thought that reality was too much to work around, and the venue was moved back to an indoor studio set at CBS Television City in Los Angeles. Those in production that planned their vacations around the unusual excursion to Panama are no doubt disappointed.

LOL - puffer fish - that would be the best outcome! Death by puffer fish for being so dull.

Then we could have a "challenge" among the castaways and Rupert would win the big bucks....

CBS has no imagination! I think this thread has the right idea for a show.

Let's do a "Survivor" for the nine nincompoops running for office by bashing Bush. Put them on an island somewhere and take all the watercraft away.
