I thought she was a he at first. I really thought it was a joke. I mean, come on, bringing in the laundry from the line after it froze. And it smells good? It smells like frost and bird doodoo. It has to be relaundered. Maybe the birds didn't do doodoos in those days.

That was pre-bird doo-doo days.

By the late 60s and early 70s, they has started pooping. We had a mulberry tree in the backyard, which made for some interesting designs on the sheets hanging on the line.

I dry my clothes outside by choice (I do have a dryer) because I like the fresh smell, but if you let the damn laundry freeze (and I have, twice) it stinks of the smoke from your fireplace, and you are right, it has to be rewashed because of the birds**t. My husband makes fun of my clothesline all the time-he hates it, and says it looks like trash lives here in a nice house.
