The ongoing Kilauea eruption has been relatively lacking in photogenic action for a few weeks, but over the weekend there was a diversion in the main lava flow that resulted in some striking images. My favorite is below; go to the source site for more.

I live in Hilo (about 30 miles from that lava river). Are you out here as well? A friend and I recently sailed all night in a trimaran down to where the lava enters the ocean. Some years ago I hiked up to the lava lake, and my bare leg pushed through the crust (but of course not into lava!) and that night I needed 10 stitches to close the wound. There has been spectacular viewing periodically these past 17 years.

Are you out here as well?No, I'm in Maryland, but I really like geology, Earth science, climate, and volcanoes in particular. I got to fly over Kilauea in 1988 during the Kupaianaha lava pond phase of this current eruption. Very hot!

You need to go back. I was there last summer and stayed at Hilo for a few nights. I cruised the island everyday and went on a stargazing tour to the top of Mauna Kea instead of taking a helicopter flight over the current active crater. Except for that night, I was out where the lava flows down by the ocean. Very, very cool (HOT!)!. Nothing going on like that picture but astounding nonetheless. I'm glad I decided to stay at Hilo instead of on the other side of the island. Much closer to the flow.
