The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…
Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
The Road Goes Ever On
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Been listening to Chicken Dance while I have morning tea and check yesterday's mail...
....so 2J, don't you think you need to make it to Entmoot bringing the eggses?
To: g'nad
I'd keep 'em in the coop for a few days...just don't let them out. Put the hay in the nest box and weight it down with some marble eggs or even some golf balls. That's called "seeding" the nest...let's them know "this is where I'm supposed to lay". Also, if you can provide light out there, they should lay for you. Otherwise, they won't lay till spring "normally", but this is just a rule of thumb, since Roy has been laying consistently since Oct. 11th. We did however add a light bulb out there just this last weekend, comes on at dark, off at dawn...and wah-lah...Benny started laying.

And about the guineas...I bet this is a good thing for them...they are closer to wild than chickens and are probably safer up in the trees. They do come home to roost, don't they?

Also, my beloved, who plays Gimli, is trying to get New Line to let him take the trilogy to Afghanistan and Iraq to screen for the soldiers. They think it's a great idea. BIG OL' JRD BUMP!!!!
There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for!

we may try the seeding trick... the barn is about 50 yards from the house, and there is no power up there fer a light, and I ain't gonna run an extension cord up there...
the guineas roost up in the coop every night with no problems... as long as they can find the gate... stoopid birds...
the largest barred rock, Carl, has become quite friendly the last few weeks... the chickens hang with the guineas, and haven't been handled much since we put them in the barn...

You know, though...and I may be reading more into it than I should...but Jar Jar seems a bit blue.
When I went out there to fetch Benny's egg, Jar Jar was in there with her...she does that with Roy too...just stands nearby, like offering moral support or encouragement or something.
Now, I went out there to check on the girls and all of them but Jar Jar were out scratching around in the bare spots on the ground where there isn't any snow. I looked in the coop and there sat Jar Jar...in the nest box, on the marble eggs.
Perhaps she's laying?? I don't think so. She just looked like she was hopeful.
Poor girl. She's Roy's age and still hasn't laid an egg. And now the younger girls have started laying.

You know when they're ready to lay if you reach down and they flatten to the ground...kind hitch their wings out a bit and flatten. It's an obvious "stance".
You go to run after them to catch them and they freeze in their tracks and flatten down and you nearly tumble over them in your momentum.
Well, you do if you're a slighty pudgy housewife, I guess.
