HOWEVER, i did end up spraying a couple that we were talking to, with red wine, when i dropped my cup (plastic cups, it was not a high class affair...) i felt bad, but what the heck could i do?

That reminds me of a party at my wife's former boss's house. His wife was mixing some punch or something and she was pouring soda water, and she spilled the soda water on her blouse. I told her "a little red wine will take that soda water right out of your blouse." She laughed, but nobody else got the joke.

Odd...It has generally been my experience that a little red wine will take the woman right out of the blouse....
