So what is the difference between the General Interest section and The Smokey Backroom section of the FR? Has The Smokey Backroom section been established because the General Interest section has sort of turned into the Hobbit section? I just want to know so I know what sort of stuff to post in The Smokey Backroom section.

I don't find Hobbits all that interesting. Well, we don't find you all that relevant either, but then we're not keeping score.
If you'd actually read The Hobbit Hole you'd find that we are much more than just General Interest. Indeed we share a common love for the writings of Tolkien and the LOTR movies.
But we've also adopted a troop in Afghanistan, and now a troop in Iraq. We've invested hundreds of dollars and supported them with numerous packages.
We get together all over the country and about 30 of us will meet in Florida this January.
We've participated in freeps and rallies across the country.
We've written letters to the editor, stuffed and stamped envelopes and have been in the thick of the political battle.
We've waged battles supporting home schooling, conservative values, lower taxes and more.
Many of our members have served with distinction in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Many of our members have served and continued to serve in full-time and part-time ministry.
We've stood with each other in prayer and support in times of death, illness, family crisis, job loss and...teenagers.
We are active (and financial) supporters of FreeRepublic
In short (no Hobbit pun intended), I'm sorry it bothers you that we are multi-dimensional.
Well, except for Flat Frodo.

You're more than welcome to come by, PJ. I just checked the back of my neck and I don't yet have a tiny plant growing from it. Sorry, I don't think I can get into all that Hobbit stuff...until I get my body/mind snatched.

Hmmm... Reading your post brings to mind that (rare) hilarious Saturday Night Live skit about William Shatner confronting a bunch of trekkies at a Star Trek convention. I'm a huge fan of the original Star Trek and enjoyed the Tolkien books but somehow, heretic that I am, I moved on to other things. Please forgive my heresy!

Stop by if you like astronomy or simply enjoy cosmic scenery. I will as long as you promise that the galactic clouds posted there don't look like outlines of Hobbits.

I moved on to other things. You shouldn't move so much. You obviously missed the point.

I know 2 divisions in the US military who are glad of those of us in the Hobbit Hole - er got our minds snatched. They think enough of us to show their appreciation by personal recognition from Afghanistan.
But, you're not interested in supporting our nation's military in a personal way huh? You're lucky, according to the guys that's okay, they're fighting for your right to be that way.

It's been around for awhile. Threads are moved there when the flaming gets intense. I think it's basically unmoderated whereas GI is moderated.
Has anybody ever posted directly to the Smokey Backroom? That's an interesting question.

Hobbits are stupid! No, Hobbits are NOT stupid. You, however, ARE ignorant.
To: Tribune7
I feel sorry for you.
Hobbits and Hobbit Holers are great people. It's a pity you're missing out.

No, Hobbits are NOT stupid.Well...I dunno about that. Before coffee...?
There are certainly stupid moments.
To: Corin Stormhands
Let me rephrase that.
Hobbits are SHORT and STUPID.

Don't be silly! We're much saner and nicer than Larry and look how much you put up with from him! Ah yes! Larry and Harry. I just saw Larry the other day. He's still as nutty as ever. The upside is that Larry has given me great story material. Since I am planning to enter as many writing contests as possible, my bizarre encounter with Larry and Harry may well help put some writing prize money in my pocket.

Hobbits are SHORT and STUPID. Sheesh! That the best you can come up with?
Oh wait "stupid" does have two syllables. I guess you're making progress.

It's been around for awhile. Threads are moved there when the flaming gets intense. Ironically the flaming on this thread is getting so intense that it might be moved to The Smokey Backroom.
