Made my first trip to this weekend's Biker Rally in Hollister, CA.
Weather was fantastic, traffic was manageable (even with in excess of 6000 bikes in attendance), people were nice -- will have to do it again next year.
My photos are here.

(Yes, I know the 1947 incident was nowhere near as bad as portrayed in LIFE Magazine and in the movie -- the above photo was staged) Indeed it was. That pic is of Don Middleton of Rockford, IL, then 19 years old and in California on a visit, and happy to oblige the photog who later sold his staged pics to Life Magazine. The Life article was followed by an even more imaginative fixtionalized account by writer Frank Rooney entitled Cycle Raid and published in Harper's Magazine. Read by Stanley Kramer, the yarn was tirned into a screenplay by John Paxton, with the resulting film staring Marlon Brando and Lee Marvin. The rest is history.
Don Middleton passed away in 1996, and was remenbered a year later in a short ceremony by some of those who had been there that day fifty years before. The beatnik-looking fella in the background wasn't one of the bikers, though, but is Gus Despera, a Hollister resident who still resides there. And still shows up as a welcome guest at the annual Hollister event biker parties. Boozefighters up!

I'll get the beer and ice, that thing is too sweet to soil! The other neat thing about the old Czech Jawas was that the seat comes off, and there's enough room behind the airbox for 5 of a six-pack. That used to come in handy at drive-ins.

Presumably it doesn't snow that much where you are, so you'd have little requirement for the optional Jawa ski outriggers, though the *slickshift* clutchless transmission can be handy. But the old Finnish ski troops who cut the Russian invaders to pieces during the 4-month *Winter War* of 1939-40 would recognize their present-day counterparts mounted on the Jawa ski bikes, and likely also consider them *worthy*. Yeah, I like'em too....

Cool stuff.
The only fun thing I ever learned about snow cycling was, when you fell off, it was usually into a snow bank.
this provided:
Cushion, instant ice pack, thermal insulation, cold beverage, shelter from the wind, and ammunition for hand formed projectiles.
On a more intelligent note,,,,,-
HD did finally come out with heated handgrips.
Such innovation is mind shattering!! <|:-)~~

On a more intelligent note,,,,,- HD did finally come out with heated handgrips. I always thought that Indian and Harley were missing a bet with the footboards [rather than pegs] being a dandy place for a nice adjustable heater to keep boots warm in wintertime. That, plus a little shielding in the toe area, could have really cut down on the wind chill problems for wintertime riders.
Of course, on my old BMW R-60/2, the offset cylinders happily kept one's feet qyuite warm in the winter. And summer....
