(vanity) Anyone ever been to Ft Walton beach in Florida?

Posted on 06/21/2003 10:43:30 PM PDT by stuck_in_new_orleans

Were thinking of going, someone said a place called "Conquestador Suites" was cheap and on the beach and towards a less-noisy end of the beach.

Anyone been to or live in Ft Walton?

Thanks for all of your help.

God bless your wife! And, God bless you for doing the baby feedings.

You're a good man...

Was stationed TDY (2 mos)at Hurlburt Field in the late sixties.
As a 19 yr. old from New York, it was the first beach I had ever seen and had no basis for comparison. In retrospect I do recall that the sand was extremely white and the water clear. The next beach on tap was China Beach.

If you want a really quiet retreat in the midst of these beaches, the best place is Mexico Beach,

It's just a few miles from here (Panama City) just south of Tyndall Air Force Base. It's a small town that doen't draw the big crowds and the pompano fishing is excellent right now.

If you do get a chance to go there, stop in at Toucan's...you won't be disappointed.

"Where's the best place to go for food, amusement parks, and bars?"

Hello!

I can answer that question with one word. DESTIN

Miles of white sand beaches; hundreds of restaurants; night clubs; amusement parks, etc.

You can find more reasonable rates for places to stay if you don't mind a short walk to the beach.

The Capt'n is right - Mexico Beach is beautiful, less crowded, and shells and starfish abound. We go about 4 times a summer and stay at the Driftwood Inn. All the rooms are kitchenettes and furnished with antiques. Across the street from the inn they have cottages for rent. They are fairly good sized, again furnished with antiques, and great for families.

Hubby left the house this morning at five to fish out of Panama City. I checked the seas for him before he left, two feet or less. Mmmmmm, gonna have something delicious and grilled for dinner tonite!

I'm pretty Cro Mag on most things but I like to be with babies when I'm not working and as old as I am , I want them to know me now...does that make any sense?

I don't have the same luxury as a 20 something dad who can get to know his kids better when they mature.

Anyhow, I just love it mostly...I am so blessed and grateful. I loved it 12 years ago too. When I wasn't traveling and was home...I was with my girls. I used to wake them up even late just to see them if I had been gone for a week or more. That always angered the ex and her nanny (Miami, au pairs are almost free...we don't have one here)

I think my ex-wife jettisoning me for a fatter mule and as is legal custom taking our girls with her gave me a very special perspective. It left a hole in my heart about my daughters...it's gotten better but it will always be there. You just learn and make the best of it and continue to "be there" so children never ever feel you did not want them enough...something like that.

PS: I'm still the disciplinarian....I'm not a total Alan Alda.

Yep....and it's like the last outpost before Bayou LaFourche....decent food too. We used to bunker ships at Bayou Lafourche so I know that hwy well all the way to the tip at the Grand Isle USCG station.

I have a second cousin who runs the Christian radio station down there.

Excellent area, kinda touristy but quiet, great white sand, and plenty to do. If you do happen to get bored Pensacola is a reasonable drive.

That's ruthless....remember Poplarville between Hattiesburg and N.O.?

They used to sit out there and bust speeders and hippies all day long back in the 70s on I-55.

Collins on US 49 north of Hattiesburg was bad too.

I've bailed plenty out of both joints...usually the bail was the "fine" sort of thing....no mug shots...no record.

The Ham House in Grenada off 55 was notrious for that and pegged your's truly in 75. The local Barneys pulled my 350 bucks out of my wallet after claiming to have found 2 seeds on my floorboard (likely actually). They said the 350 would do and sent me on my way. Judge Vance in Grenada finally put a stop to the little shakedown between the restaurant as spotters for Barney.

Bless yer heart. We all try...my girls are now almost 14 and 15...Lord help me.

Last nite was a win win win win.

I got to spend quality time with my now sitting up and teething 7 month old without his 3 year old brother having a jealousy cow.

I got to watch the World Series Poker after midnight from Binion's in Tunica....."Devilfish" won...as usual...600K

I got to play late here on FR with decent homeboys and homegirls.

And I scored big points with Mrs Wardaddy for doing the night feedings....a banner evening.

Even better than Mexico Beach is Cape San Blas.

Just keep going east on 98 thru Port St. HJoe, and turn off on C-30A, then go a few miles & turn on C-30E. You will be driving around St. Joe Bay.

Go past the Air Force tracking station & Beachcombers restautrant & you will come to a big pile of rocks. That is called the 'stumphole'. The road curves north and you will head up the peninsula. The farther you go, the prettier the beach.

Over half of the northern end of the peninsula is St. Joe State Park, rated the best beach in the nation.

You can rent a house on the Cape, but there are no hotels. Just a couple of gas stations/stores. Pricey during the summer, but if you have family or friends who will split the cost of renting a house, then it's a good deal.

I lived in Pensacola from 85-96 and visit several times a year now. Here is my guide:

Pensacola Beach for inexpensive family fun and Naval Aviation Museum. Get a cooler of shrimp and the best sushi from Joe Patty's fish market.

Destin is great for fishing, golf, and spending big money. Lots of artsy-fartsy shops in several little villages nearby. Great Fun!

Panama City Beach is best left for college frivolities like passing out in a drunken stupor.

Often overlooked are the wonderful chances to go canoeing down the cold water rivers along the panhandle if the beach has bad seaweed or waves. The current moves you along without requiring much effort. No real white water, just long sand bars for picnicing and letting the kids swim. What a great time!

Great local restraunts everywhere.

ALWAYS watch for the hurricane season.

It sounds like you and the baby had a wonderful bonding night doing very manly things.;o)

The fact that you scored major points with the Mrs. is a bonus!

Ya'll are makin' me hungry and homesick. I just moved from Vicksburg to Fresno (home of Free Republic!), but there ain't no oysters, catfish, redfish, specs, anybody who knows a damn thing about cookin'....it's a God-forsaken desert....culinary-wise.

Send a couple of Cajuns out here to teach these heathens some food manners.

Bless yer heart! I know the feeling...

Been in Oregon for 11 years. I REALLY understand the food manners thingy...nuthin' but a buncha heathen cooks north of ya', too.;o)

Also, I used to live just south of you at NAS Lemoore. Your weather is better'n ours...'cept in the summer. You'll understand that very soon, if ya' don't already.
