LET'S ROLL!!!
Looks like a busy day here as well. Will be in and out most of the day.
Ya'll would not believe how much some people refuse to let go. I am (in another forum) currently trying to lay to rest a debate with someone who still refuses to believe that Bush fairly won the 2000 election. The best part, though, is that this girl is from Australia and is living there now. She isn't even in the US. It's too funny.
As bad as seems the reach of our federal government, it ain't nuthin compared to other nations. The power to license marriage is a State power. I suppose the Feds could change marriage laws in the District -- if they dared, but not even the worst Congress could get away nationalizing marriage law.
Federalism is the genius behind the inspiration that is the American experiment.
In his Colossus defense of America during the wild 1912 Republican primary against Theodore Roosevelt, Taft defended the Constitution and America. His opponent wanted to change the very nature of government with such idiocies as easier amendment of the Constitution and the judicial recall (overturning judicial decisions by majority vote). Taft stood him down, and doing it he salvaged the nation.
Throughout the primary, the first ever, Taft spoke of the greatness of the nation. He especially loved to speak to children. At Atlantic City, Taft told some girls:
I have no doubt that when these young ladies grow to womanhood they will have the ballot, but whether you do or not you ought to make preparation to understand your country and to know the gratitude you ought to offer to God for being Americans. ...This is the best country and the best Government that ever was.Damned straight.
