Mercury hits 100
05/30/2003
The official temperature at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport soared to 100 degrees Friday.
"Whenever you get southwest winds in here, you know the temperature will probably go above normal," said WFAA-TV (Channel 8) meteorologist Steve McCauley, who forecast an afternoon high of 100 degrees, the first triple-digit reading of the season.
As of 3 p.m., the D/FW temperature was holding at 99, but 100 degree readings were reported at Addison Airport and the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth.
Those southwest winds, gusting up to 23 mph, were having at least one beneficial impact on North Texas. "That is stirring up the ozone, so even though we're expected to hit the century mark later on today, there is no air pollution watch in effect," Mr. McCauley said.

Friday's scorching temperatures are well above the average high of 87 for May 30, and Mr. McCauley said the mercury could flirt with the date's record high of 103 set in 1985.
But while May 30 may seem early for triple-digit temperatures, history tells us that there have been seven earlier dates of 100-plus temperatures in North Texas -- the earliest being March 9, 1911.
The National Weather Service says Dallas-Fort Worth averages 15 days each year that the temperature meets or exceeds the 100-degree mark, making last year -- when there was just one 100-degree day -- an exception to the rule.
"We do have some heat relief as we go into the weekend, and maybe a chance of rain as well," Mr. McCauley said, offering a forecast featuring an overnight low in the low-70s and a Saturday outlook of partly cloudy skies and a high of 92.
He said there is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday as high temperatures drop into the 80s.
