Greens Sing the Blues: 'Loony' McKinney for President?
True, the Green Party is tiny, but it was big enough in 2000 to trip Al Gore on his way to the Oval Office. Now the Bush-bashing party is split over running another spoiler in 2004 or backing the Democrats nominee.
"At the moment, everything is on the table and everything is being discussed," John Strawn, co-chairman of the Greens presidential exploratory committee, told the Washington Post.
As Kermit the Frog once noted in a different context, its not easy being Green. You have to hold your nose and back someone such as Sen. John Kerry, or come up with your own doomed candidate. Top contenders include two-time loser Ralph Nader and a certain notorious former Democrat congresswoman who in the last primary election couldnt pass muster even in a gerrymandered district.
And who might that be? None other than ex-Rep. Cynthia McKinney, infamous for her hatred of President Bush, her wild conspiracy theories about 9/11, her habit of sucking up to Muslim extremists and offending wealthy Jewish Democrat donors, and the "loony nickname bestowed upon her by U.S. Sen. Zell Miller, a fellow Georgia Democrat.
Equally nutty Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio is the Greens favorite if they back the Democrat nominee, but the more realistic among them realize he has no better chance than McKinney or Nader. Still, they cant stomach the prospect of backing one of the less extreme donkeys.
"There is no possible way that we would ever support someone like a Lieberman or a Gephardt," huffed Anita Rios, one of the party's five national co-chairmen.
The Post reports that Greens are leaning toward coming up with their own wannabe. "The party could lose its ballot status in some states if it doesn't run a presidential candidate. The public might assume the Greens' time has come and gone, without someone at the top of their ticket, and it could hurt Green candidates running for other offices.
And they want to show theyre not just a tool of the Democrat establishment like the government schoolteachers unions, the trial lawyers, Jesse Jackson and AARP.
"There's a lot of people who look at the pressure, from the Democratic Party, in particular, for the Greens not to run a candidate as being a sort of invitation to commit suicide on the Democratic Party's behalf," said co-chairman Ben Manski. "That's not something that a lot of people have a strong inclination to do."
The Greens claim to support racial quotas, so why not prove it by backing Loony McKinney? We hate to break this news to the party, but Nader is one of those Old White Males the left so despises.
Greenut Nader will probably run again, he hates both parties.
