I got that when I downloaded a thing called "gatorware". It was on someone's page as a help little thing to have to view their page better. Couldn't purge my system of it fast enough.

My AOL stops the popups dead in their tracks.

It works the best for me; I've tried others and when I tried to open another IE window or a Windows drop down box, those programs would "kill" them, too.

This program doesn't do that; just remember -- sometimes you have to hold down the CONTROL key to get a window to open!

I have IE, 2 versions of Netscape, and Mozilla. Mozilla is great at stopping popups. I like the "tabs" feature also (multiple windows are tabbed in the same frame.)

Download ad aware, the free version. Nuke the spyware on your computer. Spyware is responsible for a lot of popups.

By the way, Ernest knows a lot of good tech types, maybe he'll ping a few for us.

I use AdAware, but I also make sure to run SpyBot. Unfortunately, I don't have the link for download right in front of me, but its probably used by more IT departments than AdAware.

Another choice is netcaptor, has options to handle popups and you can have large number of open windows and then tab between them!

NetCaptor is the most powerful web browser on the planet!

I just uploaded the newest Ad Aware, and that found more than the version I already had on my computer!

It found 27 files from xupiter, and a few cookies that were newspaper connected.

We'll see if it changes my home page still!

I want to thank you for posting this thread! Those darn popup ads have been driving me nuts, and until I noticed an Response touting the benefits of a free program from Panicware I was resigned to just live with them.

Now, thanks to you and another poster I just installed the popup blocker and tester it on a web site I maintain over at GeoCities. It removed every one of those pop ups.

Thanks again!

This is a free spyware scrubber: SpyBot Search & Destroy and is better than Ad-Aware's latest. I used to use Ad-Aware and now use only Spybot S&D. Spybot S&D removes Xupiter and others.

You'll find it and others discussed on FR at Getting and keeping spyware off your computer

And here is an FR thread on Xupiter: Heads Up! Someone is posting xupitor spyware link; Don't open it!

Did you get hit with Xupiter? That is the worst thing to get hit with on the web. They will throw 1000s of ads at one time on, and as you click them off, often people accidentally hit "agree" to download their software and changes/highjacks their home page.

adsbgone seems to have destroyed it, that or the new Ad Aware I used, but I still have some worm that changes my home page to www.i-look.com

How do I find where that source code is?

I got hit with that damn XUPITER a few months ago... it is the WORST, just as you described. It was like my computer was being attacked by thousands of pop-up ads in a matter of seconds! :(

Race... are you back?

You could try to turn off JAVA scripting to keep it from changing your home page then turn the scripting back on after a reboot. More than likely you still have spyware on your system. Try the spybot suggested in post 36, it seems to be more thorough than Ad Aware.
