I heard of a woman doing a similar thing about 15 or 20 years ago. It seems she lived in Texas and was wanting to see her grandchildren in New England and had little money. So she basically sold her meager worldy possessions and bought a horse and took off.
She would work a few days until she had enough to meet her needs and then would travel on until she needed more money. She became so well known that people would call friends in the towns whe was headed towards and offer her odd jobs and a place to stay. IIRC, it took her about 9 months to make the trip. Never heard what became of her.
