Student suspected of stealing 854 pairs of panties, police say

MENOMONIE -- Police say a 22-year-old UW-Stout student wasn’t hunting for Easter eggs but thong panties when he broke into a rental home Sunday in Menomonie.

Anthony Scholfield, 516½ S. Broadway St., was in custody this morning at the Dunn County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court today.

Eight women, ages 20 to 22, living at a rental home in the 900 block of Eighth Street East reported thong-style panties missing after break-ins during Thanksgiving and the university’s spring break.

“Entry there had always been through a basement window,” Menomonie Police Sgt. Todd Swartz said. “Over this weekend we thought because the students were going home for Easter we would monitor it.”

According to police reports:

At about 4:45 a.m. Sunday an officer noticed a basement window on the south side of the rental home had been broken into. Police set up a perimeter around the home and waited about a half-hour when a man, later identified as Scholfield, opened the west side back door. He spotted one of the officers, went back into the rental home and locked the door.

Police forced their way into the home and arrested Scholfield, citing him for burglary and criminal property damage.

Scholfield did not have anything in his possession, but he admitted he had broken into the home before and agreed to have police look for a sack containing about 75 pairs of women’s panties in his apartment. Six of the 75 pairs were identified by one of the women living in the rental home.

Scholfield told police he was participating in panty raids to get the women’s underwear.

After obtaining a warrant, officers searched Scholfield’s apartment and found 854 pairs of thong-style underwear, Swartz said. All of the panties were small or extra-small in size.

“They were in containers in the closet and found in dresser drawers,” Swartz said. “We’re thinking he may have gone to different house parties and taken three pair here, four pair there. Some women might even be embarrassed even to report it.”

Menomonie Police Investigator Michael Mason said panty raids do occur, but he is not aware of a suspect having this number of potentially stolen panties in his possession before.

Powers can be reached at (715) 235-9018 or pamela.powers@ecpc.com.

Anyone who has had an ongoing problem with stolen undergarments is asked to call the Police Department at (715) 232-2198, particularly if their home has been broken into.

When I was in college I had a laundry load of underwear stolen. For the life of me, I couldn't understand how someone would want to take another person's underwear. Even if it had just been laundered, still.....eeeewwwwwwww.

Exhibit A -- six's pairs of panties -- and if I were a jurist on this case, I would be compelled to examine the evidence.
