...all the scientists uniting to tell us when we would run out of resources, food, and begin to pollute ourselves to death. And when was this supposed to start happening?

Every concerned "scientist" with half a brain (which seems to be a common malady--they can forecast population growth but think everything else is fixed) has been forecasting imminent doom since the days of Thomas Malthus. Of course, such forecasts help bring in the grant dollars whereas finding the world a wonderful place leaves one unfunded.
