Apologies to your teacher, but a lot is also a grouping of similar items. One can bid on a "lot" of items at an auction. In this sense it can be used to describe any number of similar items.
It is sometimes misused, and is treated as a singular noun. It is not a plural noun.
Your teacher was incorrect.
