18 is an artifical number. It's just a measure of a collective idea of when a child reaches adulthood.

As far as 18 year olds being allowed to do what they want, their track record is miserable.

It may be an "artificial number" but it is the legal standard we have chosen. Therefor, you have no legal say over what your 18 year old child does. Perhaps you should look to how those children were raised up to their 18th birthday to find a solution, and not try to attempt to control their adult life.
