Last time I checked, one was an adult at 18. A parent can offer suggestions, or even threaten kicking the kid out of their house, but after 18, they can do whatever they please...

18 is an artifical number. It's just a measure of a collective idea of when a child reaches adulthood.

As far as 18 year olds being allowed to do what they want, their track record is miserable.
