Dixie Chicks feel backlash at CMT show
The Atlanta Journal Constitution ^ | 4/8/03 | Craig Seymour

Sometimes forgiveness is hard to come by, as the Dixie Chicks learned Monday night during CMT's annual Flameworthy Video Music Awards.

The trio, currently experiencing a heated backlash for criticizing President Bush during a London concert, didn't attend the event, which is like country's MTV Awards. But at least one presenter tried to put in a good word for them.

"We're in the South, a place of sin and redemption and hopefully forgiveness," said comedian Brett Butler. "So maybe in a couple of weeks, we'll just all try to forgive the Dixie Chicks."

Her words were met with a wall of boos.

Not only that, but the Chicks, one of country's all-time top-selling acts, failed to win any of the four awards for which they were nominated. This is especially significant since the Flameworthies are voted on by fans on CMT's Web site. (Voting closed April 5.) The group/duo category served as an especially biting example of anti-Chicks sentiment.

Though the Chicks' latest album, "Home," has sold more than 3 million copies, the group was beaten by country boy band Rascal Flatts, which has moved less than 500,000 units of its current set, "Melt."

The debate over the Chicks' comments is just one example of how country has emerged as the genre most immediately impacted by the war in Iraq. The current No.1 country song is Darryl Worley's pro-war ballad, "Have You Forgotten," which he performed to a standing ovation during the show. The tune plays like a Bush administration policy paper in linking 9/11 with the situation in Iraq. "And you say we shouldn't worry about bin Laden/Have you forgotten," Worley sang to the cheering crowd.

Others seemed to deliberately avoid commenting on the war. Sheryl Crow, who has worn anti-war clothing and accessories at other award shows this year, simply donned a black Johnny Cash T-shirt when performing "Picture," her hit duet with Kid Rock.

Predictably, the most outspoken artist on the war was firebrand Toby Keith, who co-hosted the program with the seemingly inflatable Pamela Anderson. Early in the evening, he struck a subdued, conciliatory note: "Whether you're for it or against it, let's support the guys and girls who are over there."

But by the end of the night he was performing a medley of Merle Haggard's "Fightin' Side of Me" with his own chest-thumping 9/11 anthem, "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)," amid blazing pyrotechnic blasts and showers of confetti.

When "Courtesy" won best video, Keith said, "I'd like to dedicate this great award to Mr. Rumsfeld [Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld] and [General] Tommy Franks and all the people putting it down for us over there. . . . God bless the USA, baby."

"I remember my disbelief when my father told me that the tune of a Beastie Boys song was stolen from a Led Zeppelin song."

Lets see, that would be she's crafty, using The Ocean. Although, now that I look, they have use LZ samples in several of their "songs". To be honest, it actually pains me to dislike them now, as their music was a major part of my adolescence 8(

"Those two dumped their friend and original member of the group for the anti bush ditz. They deserve what they get."

Which would be what, winodog.
What do they "deserve"?

Don't get me wrong, here.
I couldn't care less what happens to these three.
To me, the sound the Blixie Twits makes is truly "muzac to my ears."

Be that as it may, the only point I tried making was the three individuals are in a "business partnership," together. Period.

In this world of insane competition for the limelight, the Blixie's climb to the summit was not easy & as such?
Was *something* to be treated very carefully.

They're not a "solo" act, y'know.
What one does (or doesn't do) reflects on the other two; &, so each individual is OBLIGATED to being exceptionally careful with the two-thirds part of the "property" not belonging to 'em.
That is, IF what the *one* intends to do (or say) will refect on the other two?
Is more than "Hoyle" wino; I believe that'd be outlined quite clearly in the contract which binds them, together.

Now as it stands?
*One* person violated their part -- visa vi her BIG mouth -- & for right now?
That spells just one thing for the "corporation" d.b.a "The Dixie Chicks."

..."Show's over."

Ten minutes with Uday would have Miss Chick ready to kiss Dubya's ankles if he'd just get her out of there. Did you hear the story about him raping, torturing, and disfiguring some woman for 3 months before finally feeding her to his dobermans?

The biography on the chicks has Natalie clearly expressing contempt for country music. Her dad is a guitarist for the group and gave her demo to the two sisters; they wanted her to join them. First thing they did was hire a stylist (courtesy of Sony) and the rest is history. She's trying real hard to cross over to pop with their rendition of
Landslide, former Fleetwood Mac hit.

I'd have to look around, I heard it this morning on FOX, a fellow wrote a story for Maxim magazine (I think I heard him say) about Uday and Qusay. Apparently Uday is/was such a sociopath even dear old Dad was a little uneasy about handing over the family business to him.

I had to read that rant twice.
I was just pointing out that they "ditched" the original singer that had been with them for some time to my knowledge. Most people do not know that. Now thats fine and dandy because it seems that is what they needed to make the big time.
I just always felt there was some loyalty and honor missing, but I could be wrong.
So when I say they deserve what they get I have the notion that some loyalty and honor may be missing in the back of my mind.
It would not be the first time I have been wrong and I have not heard the original singers story.

well I know old Saddam paralyzed Uday in an arranged shooting in punishment for Uday killing an uncle with an AK-47. Something about the uncle disresecting Uday in front of a woman and Saddam had him shot b/c of the dishonor he brought upon family (not in punishment for killing his uncle, however).

Spartanburg is a County different from Greenville Co. I think the Dixie Chicks will be performing at The Bi-Lo
Center (Greenville County's municipal auditorium). Greenville is not prime territory for the 'Chicks' to enter into on the heels of Maine's ill advised comments.

Ahhhhh, I see where you're coming from, now.
It sounded like you felt the other two should stick with the *mouth*, instead of dumping her.
Which as I said, wouldn't have mattered to me had you felt that way as I don't listen to 'em, anyway, myself.
Was genuinly curious to hear why you might've felt like that, is all.

"I had to read that rant twice."

HA!!
Easier than my typing it twice. {g}

"I was just pointing out that they "ditched" the original singer that had been with them for some time to my knowledge. Most people do not know that."

I'm one of those people who didn't know that, too.
Interesting.
Seems this *group* went to extraordinary lengths to achieve their success once before, then.

"Now thats fine and dandy because it seems that is what they needed to make the big time."

The other two may just have to pull the ol' switcheroo again; IF, they're entertaining notions of saving their "trade name."
Assuming it even can be saved?

"I just always felt there was some loyalty and honor missing, but I could be wrong. So when I say they deserve what they get I have the notion that some loyalty and honor may be missing in the back of my mind."

Well "loyalty" used mean a lot, back some years ago.
Of course the word was usually used in the context of one's "friend(s)," or a "wife" etc.
This is "business."

Anyone who's felt "loyalty" towards a corporation they worked for, then, found themselves outplaced into the street in the snap of their fingers?
Knows "loyalty" & "business" are no longer compatible, in 2003.

No where is this more evident than the music/entertainment business.
There're simply too many people these days to be extending anyone a "break" when/if they're dumb enough to make an incredibly stupid, shortsighted mistake and/or comment which'll xlate into tanking profits.

Of course, these gals played to the "country" fans; so, their fate was sealed at the very *instant* the loudmouth had finished uttering her anti-American smear.

...now let's see if a similar fate awaits Eddy Vetter, eh?

Actually, I was referring to "Rhymin' and Stealin'" using "When the Levy Breaks." I never noticed "The Ocean" in "She's Crafty." I will have to try and track it down now.

I've got to say it one more time. If this is how they really feel, if they are ashamed of Bush, then why should they apologize? They will just have to accept the career hit and move on. It's kind of courageous. I mean, why are we insisting on an apology. An apology only works if you mean it. I actually think that in this day and age it's kind of cool for them to stand up for their beliefs, even if they are misguided.

Don't know anything about the area -- only what is posted on the Gallagher's Army web site:

Concert Location: Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina
at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium

Says it is in the same community, but I certainly don't know that for sure -- probably is though.
