Word For The Day, Friday, 3/21/03
3/21/03
Posted on 03/21/2003 1:42:33 AM PST by Bella_Bru
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Teacher's note:
I know some of you wonder why I post WFTD just after midnight every night. The reason is simple. I am on the west coast. If I post it when I get up, it would be late morning for many of you, and I do not want any of you to think that I forgot to post it. Also, I know many of you are irked by the fact that you do not always receive a grade and critique, or that the critique is non-existent. Once again, by the time I get up and get around to this thread, it is upwards of 200 posts. My apologies if any of you are annoyed beyond belief.
supposititious\suh-poz-uh-TISH-uhs\, adjective:
1. Fraudulently substituted for something else; not being what is purports to be; not genuine; spurious; counterfeit.
2. Hypothetical; supposed.
Etymology: Supposititious is from Latin suppositicius, from suppositus, past participle of supponere, "to put under, to substitute," from sub-, "under" + ponere, "to put." It is related to suppose.

there was no such thing as OBJECTIVE REALITY, that everything was merely POINT OF VIEW
This is, actually, the philosophy behind our post-modern lefties. There is no objective reality and reason is meaningless. Their "big thinkers" actually argue this. Which makes them even scarier than ever.

how do you answer it, except with ridicule and ludicrous examples of facts which may or may not be real or just MIGHT be a point of view. Are we really bombing baghdad to smithereens right now, or is that just my opinion?

Miss Rose, see what kind of response you get when you ask them, where the heck were all these pacifists during Kosovo. I got a surprisingly honest answer from a sweet young thing I was arguing with on the bus a few weeks ago: she said a lot of the protestors were still upset with the presidential election result and that's why they're bitching. She then ruined it by going on to give me some of the most pinheaded arguments I ever heard about why the war was wrong. (Sigh!) If only those things had been brains...

Sorry to quibble, Doc, but I think what you're looking for here are some of the words to the Tom Lehrer song "Smut":
Old books can be indecent books,
Though recent books are bolder.
For filth, I'm glad to say,
Is in the mind of the beholder.
When correctly viewed,
Everything is lewd.
I could tell you things about Peter Pan
And the Wizard of Oz - there's a dirty old man!

Beats me how you answer it. You're probably not supposed to answer it.
I guess they got tired of being beaten in rational argument and this garbage is what they hide behind. This way, they can at least break even every time if everything's just a matter of opinion. I don't know what they'd say if you asked them why on earth their puerile opinions should run everyone's lives. (Another reason maximized individual freedom's such a good thing, it helps prevent us being controlled by others' opinions).
