The redesigned Veterans Committee failed to elect anyone to the Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

Brooklyn Dodgers first baseman and New York Mets manager Gil Hodges came closest, getting 50 votes and falling 11 shy.

Sixty-one of 81 votes were needed for election on the players' ballot, and 60 of 79 were needed on the "composite" ballot, which included managers, executives and umpires.

Minnesota hitting star Tony Oliva and NL umpire Doug Harvey each had 48 votes, and Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo had 46."I'm more hurt than disappointed," Santo said. "I was little bit too high. I feel I played the game the way it should be played. I felt I should be in there....

I was very disappointed on behalf of my man, Ron Santo. I rate him easily among the top ten third basemen of all time. Not in the top five--he's behind Mike Schmidt, Brooks Robinson, Eddie Mathews, George Brett, and Pie Traynor, to be sure--but possibly as high as sixth.

Between many hundreds of games in person and at least that many on TV, I literally saw most of the games that Ron Santo played. He was unquestionably the best NL third baseman of that era (early '60s to mid 70s), both offensively and defensively. Also, one must compare his offensive stats against other players of those years, not against today's inflated stats.

This morning I was thinking that if Ronnie gets elected, I would travel to Cooperstown for the induction ceremony. The Cubs were like part of our whole Chicago family back then, and Ron Santo was the heart and soul of the Cubs.

Santo definitely is a "homer" as an announcer.

That was the reason for my 'aw man, aw boy" in my 1st post.
We make bets how far into the game before Santo gives it a disgusted aw boy or aw man.
In a game last year, him & pat were talking about cracked bats.
Santo was asked something like this:
"Ronnie, if you were on a hitting tear and you cracked a bat, would you put a nail in it,try and hide the nail and keep using the bat?"

Santo's on air answer "Damn straight". My car almost ended up in a ditch, I laughed so hard.

I'm suprised at the small amount of votes Santo got.
I'm guessing Ronnie is toast re: the HOF.
