2/26/03

Posted on 02/25/2003 11:44:53 PM PST by Bella_Bru

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Teacher's note:

Please help me welcome Lunatic Fringe to our class! Also, due to the fact that I missed class yesterday, you will all recieve A's.

palaver\puh-LAV-ur; puh-LAH-vur\, noun:
palaver, intransitive verb, transitive verb

1.Talk; conversation; especially: a. idle talk b. talk intended to beguile or deceive.
2. A parley usually between persons of different backgrounds or cultures or levels of sophistication; a talk; hence, a public conference and deliberation.
Other forms:
intransitive verb:
To use palaver; to talk idly.

transitive verb:
To use palaver to; to flatter; to cajole.

[H]e is glad to palaver of his many adventures, as a boy will whistle after sundown in a wood.
--O. Henry, "The Man Higher Up"

Etymology: Palaver derives from Late Latin parabola, a proverb, a parable, from Greek parabole, from paraballein, to compare, from para-, beside + ballein, to throw. In Medieval Latin, parabola acquired the further senses 'word' and 'tale, story', whence Portuguese palavra (compare Spanish palabra, word), whence palaver , with its own new, naturally derivative senses.

Actually, I laughed directly after CDs homurous comment about your chochlate intake. Besides, give me a break. Just flew in from Detroit this morn.

Listening to people whine at public meetings over a project and also defending some work I did from critics of same project.

However, last night I nearly experienced a dream - a flight attendant I had been drinking/talking/laughing with at the hotel bar asked if I wanted to go off and "party."

Hi xs. Another ice day today. Not a snow day, because there's no snow. It's just frozen rain, sleet, slush mess. Still about a 2 to 3 inch accumulation, so I decided not to get out in it today. I have shoveled off the driveway and sidewalk however.

I'm just so sick and tired of so many of my stories ending "it was all good fun, 'til the gay part..."

Hell Dubs - Frankly I'm surprised you knew I was a guy. I assumed you just figured all the hassle I give XS was typical for one of her switch-hitting girlfriends.

I loved seeing the crocuses come up. Don't know if they grow here. Ours were (thinking back 35 years), I think, white with a purple stripe, and purple?

i am home now. the roads are fairly bad. i saw the funniest thing though, on the way home, a handwritten sign saying STOP GLOBAL WARMING, BAN SUVs, and it was stuck in a snowbank! this was even better because at the time i was listening to seanny in the car and he was DEMOLISHING RFK,Jr. on the SUV/environmentalist issue. He had his stammering he was in such a corner.

While the Iraqi leaders continue to mislead the UN with more palaver, the US is getting ready to introduce them to the daisy cutter's big brother.
