Posted on 02/25/2003 11:44:53 PM PST by Bella_Bru
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Teacher's note:
Please help me welcome Lunatic Fringe to our class! Also, due to the fact that I missed class yesterday, you will all recieve A's.
palaver\puh-LAV-ur; puh-LAH-vur\, noun:
palaver, intransitive verb, transitive verb
1.Talk; conversation; especially: a. idle talk b. talk intended to beguile or deceive.
2. A parley usually between persons of different backgrounds or cultures or levels of sophistication; a talk; hence, a public conference and deliberation.
Other forms:
intransitive verb:
To use palaver; to talk idly.
transitive verb:
To use palaver to; to flatter; to cajole.
[H]e is glad to palaver of his many adventures, as a boy will whistle after sundown in a wood. --O. Henry, "The Man Higher Up"
Etymology: Palaver derives from Late Latin parabola, a proverb, a parable, from Greek parabole, from paraballein, to compare, from para-, beside + ballein, to throw. In Medieval Latin, parabola acquired the further senses 'word' and 'tale, story', whence Portuguese palavra (compare Spanish palabra, word), whence palaver , with its own new, naturally derivative senses.

i was never one to see Bruce's appeal, but i know grown women my age that still go nuts over him. and i hate when anyone that is remotely appealing opens their yap on politics because then it invariably ruins any fantasy potential. you know, i don't think it is the same for men, but for women, as we are more discriminating, brains matter....

"but for women, as we are more discriminating, brains matter....Brains matter? Wel, I suppose so.....
But whenever a guy sees sandals and bare toes.....(No p-hose!)... Brains aren't what comes to mind first.
His mind starts wandering upwards immediately. (Not that it ever gets out of the gutter, but it does start wandering upwards.)

oh and another difference....when women meet a man, their first thought (not even in the top 10 actually) is NOT what it would be like to go to bed with them.

Definitely. Sparse snowfall in winter portends fires in the summer.

See if you can guess who said this:
Saddam has driven everybody to the edge here. . . . [The president] has more approval to go ahead with military force now than at any time since the Gulf War. . . . The goals of the administration are really pretty clear, and that's to raise the price for Saddam if he wants to keep making these weapons. . . . We don't want him to have anthrax. . . . Do you seriously think if there is an air campaign that people are going to go into the streets and countries are going to condemn America for taking that action? The world wants to be rid of Saddam Hussein.
The answer: Eleanor Clift, on "The McLaughlin Group." The date was Nov. 13, 1998. Now that a Republican is president, of course, Clift is one of Saddam's shrillest defenders.
Clift is a major purveyor of palaver. I can't watch McLaughlin any more because of her. Too much risk for my big screen television. I'm liable to pull an Elvis and pump a round into her image.

i like purple ones Something tells me you shouldn't have said that. :)
