Word For The Day, Wednesday, 2/26/03
2/26/03

Posted on 02/25/2003 11:44:53 PM PST by Bella_Bru

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Teacher's note:

Please help me welcome Lunatic Fringe to our class! Also, due to the fact that I missed class yesterday, you will all recieve A's.

palaver\puh-LAV-ur; puh-LAH-vur\, noun:
palaver, intransitive verb, transitive verb

1.Talk; conversation; especially: a. idle talk b. talk intended to beguile or deceive.
2. A parley usually between persons of different backgrounds or cultures or levels of sophistication; a talk; hence, a public conference and deliberation.
Other forms:
intransitive verb:
To use palaver; to talk idly.

transitive verb:
To use palaver to; to flatter; to cajole.

[H]e is glad to palaver of his many adventures, as a boy will whistle after sundown in a wood.
--O. Henry, "The Man Higher Up"

Etymology: Palaver derives from Late Latin parabola, a proverb, a parable, from Greek parabole, from paraballein, to compare, from para-, beside + ballein, to throw. In Medieval Latin, parabola acquired the further senses 'word' and 'tale, story', whence Portuguese palavra (compare Spanish palabra, word), whence palaver , with its own new, naturally derivative senses.

I do feel for you two.

New cabinets? I thought you were the non-decorator, xs!

We've put off putting on a new roof. We have to do that after this storm.

Gotta go for a bit. Had a backache (remnants of a traffic collision a hundred years ago) for three days, now it's gone. But still going to the chiropractor to get everything in ship shape.

the wall unit under the back stairs in the family room, where the tv etc is, has never looked right in that recessed area. i wanted something built in to take advantage of that space and to add some storage to store some of xskids JUNK which is unsightly!

It's all wild palavaring.
The old status fades
The future evades
And great men will end up winning.

Is it really that deep? I love those little bulbs that pop up through the snow. Can't think of their name offhand, but they are the first ones up.

Crocuses. We had two kinds that would pop up mid-March in the middle of the back yard, back in our house in Michigan.

I've never been to a chiro. the parents of one of the little one's playmates are both chiros and are nice people and have a good reputation around here - I will probably callm them if it becomes necessary.

Have you all seen/heard this? It was played on a local talk radio program yesterday afternoon.

Have You Forgotten?
Country artist Darryl Worley

I hear people saying we don't need this war
I say there's some things worth fighting for
What about our freedom and this piece of ground?
We didn't get to keep 'em by backing down
They say we don't realize the mess we're getting in
Before you start preaching
Let me ask you this my friend

[CHORUS 1] Have you forgotten how it felt that day
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away?
Have you forgotten when those towers fell?
We had neighbors still inside
Going through a living hell
And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout Bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

They took all the footage off my T.V.
Said it's too disturbing for you and me
It'll just breed anger that's what the experts say
If it was up to me I'd show it every day
Some say this country's just out looking for a fight
After 9/11 man I'd have to say that's right

[CHORUS 1] Have you forgotten how it felt that day
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away?
Have you forgotten when those towers fell?
We had neighbors still inside
Going through a living hell
And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout Bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

I've been there with the soldiers
Who've gone away to war
And you can bet they remember
Just what they're fighting for

[CHORUS 2] Have you forgotten all the people killed?
Some went down like heroes in that Pennsylvania field
Have you forgotten about our Pentagon?
All the loved ones that we lost
And those left to carry on
Don't you tell me not to worry about Bin Laden
Have you forgotten?
Have you forgotten?
Have you forgotten?

I have to say, nobody can palaver quite like a British tabloid.

Lurkers? Lurkers? We have an audience for this? Bloody hell. Does that mean I have to watch my grammar, clean up my language, stop chewing gum and take my feet off the desk?

"Also, due to the fact that I missed class yesterday, you will all recieve As's. ...

Now, this isn't a problem for me, (since my bottom line is so skinny I can still get into the bluejeans I had back in high school....), but what about the students (not to name names or imply anything of course) who already have enough As's so they don't need another one?

I hope not, because then I would have to stop taking bets, smoking, and drinking, all while in class. No wonder WFTD is so great.

Nah. I looked into the problem very closely and don't see anything worries at all.

You can always leave your feet on my desk......

That little snow indicates little Missouri/Missippippi flooding in the spring...but what about water reserves?

No drought worries?

I just finished reading that Weekly Standard article. I can't say I care what any of those music types have to say about anything (hell, I've never even heard of most of them,) but I do wish some kind-hearted soul would jam Bruce Springsteen's guitar into his mouth before he grants another interview. When I was a teenager, I was madly in love with that guy, and I still maintain he's the greatest living rock musician. It's just very painful for me to realize he's a drivelling idiot as well.
