At the request of members, I am restarting those "Tales from the Dark UnderBelly Of the Beast"-- the stories and issues that the press and media either ignore, won't even talk about, or will mention once and forevermore claim "it's old news..."
Naturally, some will be stories which interest me, or things I think we all need to be aware of.
I am experimenting with a minor change in presentation- when I can, I will cut to
with a keyword or two and see what kind of links to "mainstream" stories I can find in contrast to what we see here and on other sites.
May I remind you of a couple of points to bear in mind?
Each link usually has many other links within- follow them all to get "the rest of the story."
Don't forget the "open multiple browsers" trick with control-n -- this allows you to hold your place with one, and use the others to follow links, run searches, etc.
Rather than go back and rehash old links, I'll give you links to the original posts here:

A stunning new poll shows that the Democrats are losing the American public, in a very big way: Sympathetic Vibrations. (Hat tip: Balloon Juice.) 08:42 AM PST | link: 162 comments
Four years after 9/11 and almost three years after America deposed one of the most vicious and genocidal tyrants of the 20th century, Hollywood finally has decided to make a movie about the Iraq War that actually depicts the US forces as the protagonists. Does this news come from the American media? No, we get to find out about it from the UK, and Michelle Malkin:
I can't wait to see this one at least a couple of times, at least as an antidote to the idiotic Constant Gardener. I expect that the Hollywood press will treat this as a dirty little secret, sniffing at the jingoism of Bruce Willis and declining to give this effort much coverage. Hollywood prefers its war movies as psychodramas where American soldiers get portrayed as murderous thugs and nutcases, led by incompetents in pointless missions that do nothing but kill everything that moves.

In need of some momentum in Congress for legislative traction, George Bush has finally decided to start addressing illegal immigration and the porous southern border of the United States.
At least the issue will find its way back to the national debate, with some momentum to finally get legislative treatment next year.
The Cindy Sheehan Traveling Road Show appears to have lost its steam, according to multiple sources this weekend. The protest camp shut itself down outside the Bush ranch in Crawford, TX this afternoon after drawing less than 200 protestors over the holidays -- Power Line has a picture of Sheehan waiting for people to come sign her book on Saturday. The only reason the Left has dropped Sheehan is because of her speaking out against Hillary Clinton. After the thousands that thronged to "Camp Casey" -- which Sheehan has now leased from the Crawford farmer for all of 2006 for more of such spectacles -- the turnout for the fall version of the protest shows that Sheehan has come to 14:59 of her allotment of fame. Cindy is now a footnote in the last chapter. The Media is on to the "We, Democrats are responsible for the troop withdrawl. And, any Iraqi success stories are because of us as well, btw." chapter. I have reached the conclusion that the Zionists have absolutely no right in what they call Israel, that they have built their state not beside but on top of the Palestinian people, and that there can be no peace as long as contemporary Israel retains its present form. I hasten to make clear that none of this gives me any pleasure, but in the great scheme of things my personal wishes do not weigh heavily in the scale pans of history. I wish I did not think what I do, I hope I am wrong. My conclusions are based on the answers to five questions.
1. Did the Jews of the Old Testament come from what is now Israel? The answer is No.
2. Are the Jews of the world today simply the descendants of the people of the Diaspora two thousand years ago? The answer is, only in part.
3. Does the right of return apply to people who occupied some land two thousand years ago for a historically brief period, to the detriment of those who have been there since? Obviously no. Imagine a world where every people claimed that right.
4. Did the Balfour Declaration give the Zionists the right to establish a state in Israel? The answer is no. At the time the British Government had no right to give.
5. Did the United Nations Resolution of November 1947 give Zionists the right to establish the present state of Israel? The answer is no, and they have continuously and relentlessly violated that resolution for more than half a century, so that any tatters that now remain are void, by their action.
Honest Reporting has more: Culture Mag Questions Israels Right to Exist.
Democrats have tried painting Jack Abramoff's sleazy and allegedly criminal lobbying efforts as a strictly Republican scandal for the last several months, tying Abramoff chiefly to Tom DeLay. However, as the investigation into Abramoff continues, more and more ties to Democrats have emerged, including Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid. Now it appears that the ranking Senate Democrat on the committee that has taken the lead in investigating Abramoff has more than a oversight connection to Abramoff himself:
Believe me, I'm delighted to see anyone crooked get his just desserts; as far as I'm concerned, men like Randy Cunningham should do a couple of tours at Club Fed if they use their positions of trust to sell out for bribes and kickbacks. Anyone who did so with Abramoff should bunk up with Cunningham at the first oppportunity. However, let's quit pretending that Abramoff represents some sort of Republican "culture of corruption" and instead acknowledge that the sleaze has a much more ecumenical stench than the Democrats want to acknowledge. Otherwise, they'd be better served by keeping their mouths shut.

From Today's Ottawa Sun : 12 Years of Liberal Boondoggles
1993: CHOPPERS
Upon taking power in 1993, the Liberals killed a contract to replace the aging Sea King military helicopters, resulting in at least $500 million in cancellation penalties. The 40-year-old, accident-prone choppers are still flying.
1995: GUN REGISTRY
(1995-2005) Originally forecast to cost $2 million in 1995, the auditor general predicted in 2003 that actual costs would escalate to $1 billion by 2004-05. Other independent calculations have suggested the costs have actually ballooned to $2 billion.
1997: PEARSON
Liberals paid $60 million $45 million in direct out-of-pocket expenses plus $15 million for lawyers to Pearson Airport Consortium in 1997 as compensation for cancelling the privatization of Terminals 1 and 2.
2000: FUEL REBATE
A botched $1.4-billion heating fuel rebate program doled out cash to the wrong Canadians. Then-finance minister, Paul Martin, announced the gift just before the 2000 federal election, but the auditor general later discovered that as little as 18% made its way to low-income Canadians. Some rebates went to dead people, prisoners and students who were living at home and didn't pay heating bills.
2000: HRDC
Calling accounting problems widespread and serious, the auditor general revealed in 2000 that $1 billion was mismanaged in job-creation grants handled by Human Resources Development Canada, under minister Jane Stewart. A recreation of the paper trail later found only a few million was improperly disbursed.
2002: CHALLENGER JETS
The Liberal government spent $101 million on luxury Challenger jets deemed unnecessary by officials at the Department of National Defence. An auditor general's report said the purchase, rushed through on the last day of the fiscal year in 2002, broke purchasing rules.
2003: RADWANSKI
Inadequate oversight and spending controls allowed former privacy commissioner George Radwanski to rack up thousands of tax dollars in lavish lunches and luxury travel. Last year, the auditor general also found that Radwanski and executive staff were improperly cashing out vacation, overbilling for expenses and creating a hostile work environment.
2004: OUELLET
Ex-Chretien cabinet minister Andre Ouellet piled up a $2-million expense tab during his reign at Canada Post. He resigned after a damning audit criticized his hospitality expenses and how contracts were awarded under the sponsorship program, but claimed he was working on the honour system.
2005: DINGWALL
David Dingwall, another Chretien crony who landed a plum post as head of the Royal Canadian Mint, resigned his $277,000-a-year job after it was revealed he and his aides ran up more than $740,000 in expenses the previous year. Adding insult to injury, taxpayers are also on the hook for a severance package even though he voluntarily quit.
2005: ADSCAM
The auditor general revealed that up to $100 million of the $250-million sponsorship program went to Liberal-friendly advertising firms for little or no work in 2004. After a public inquiry, Justice John Gomerys report exonerated Prime Minister Paul Martin but blamed Chretiens inner circle for an elaborate kickback scheme that saw the Liberal Party receive as much as $769,497 in backdoor donations. The program was established to boost the national profile in Quebec after the 1995 referendum on sovereignty.
