CS: darn good question,I recall two single bladed axes and one double, in TTT during the "sprintin'" scenes seemed to have two strapped on his back, but that is something to watch for.

I wondered that myself because watching the movie yesterday, I noticed that when the three hunters turned to attack the 'White Wizard', Gimli threw an ax and Gandalf broke it in flight. But then when it showed Gimli again, after they realized it was Gandalf, he was holding another ax!
