The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

yuh lost some cool points with that one...I'd lose more than points if it wasn't cooked.

The boys are just having peanut butter sandwiches, but I'll make them a nice supper. I will be rushed, because our homeschool support group meets tonight.
Should be fun...me sitting there being the square peg that I am, wondering at all these ladies complaining about burn-out and not understanding or even fitting in.
You know before Christmas they all compiled a list of questions to ask your children at the dinner table. Each mom contributed one question. They didn't put mine in...but I wasn't surprised. All the questions were deep and meaningful. Mine was "What channel should we put it on?"

All the questions were deep and meaningful. Mine was "What channel should we put it on?"LOL - I love it! Sounds like my Mom would have had fun with that group...she was always amused by people who would get burned out homeschooling, usually because they were essentially trying to replicate "real" school at home, down to time schedules and recesses and all!

"What channel should we put it on?" I know how Becky would respond to that one!
"Mommy, please put it on Cartoon Neckwork!"

See you later! Going shopping for those sneakers. Not that I'll buy them, but someone might want to get me a birthday present someday and it'd be good to know the size!

May the good fortune of the Sales Clearance Fairy be with you! *laugh*
Good luck, 2J!

I see that those boots have 400 grams of thinsulate...am looking at a pair with 2000, my toes get so cold.

e-Coli is a scary thing, isn't it? *grin*
I don't know why I risk it, but maybe it's because I've had too many "cardboard steak" experiences. At least when it's undercooked, it stays juicy and soft. :)
Other than that, I can't blame you.

e-Coli is a scary thing, isn't it? Well, that's what my 9th grade biology teacher said...
Actually, it's just always been a preference thing. I was a pretty picky eater as a kid, and that's how Mom cooked 'em. That just hasn't changed.
But I agree about the cardboard "steaks" in restaurants. I won't order a steak unless I know it's a quality restaurant that can cook it properly.
As an aside, my family once took me to Lone Star for Father's Day. We sat next to a table with two young "upwardly mobile" couples. We overheard one of the women say "I couldn't order that. That would be too much red meat!"

(Then what the *$%& are you doing in LONE STAR????)
To: Corin Stormhands
I've always loved rare steak. Somehow in old(er) age, I seem to be wanting it cooked a little more.
Ordered prime rib a week or so ago in a restaurant, it came to the table very rare and still cold. The waitress said I need to order it "medium" to get it cooked enough to become warm, so guess that's what I'll do.

My mom fries up those thin Cuban steaks all the time. So good and they have to be well done (too thin to be anything else).
Man, I could go for a pan con bistec right now! Especially with shoestring potato crispies on it. Mmm, mmm good!
I'm the only one in my family that likes their steak "rare". Everyone else is either grossed out or worried about e-Coli.

You got me thinkin....Beef...it's what's for dinner!

Cuban food is great stuff, my wife likes going to Rio Crystal, on Bird Road. We always show up around 6:30-7:00, the place is not crowded yet, I am supposing the Spanish folks come in a little later.
She likes vieja ropas or chicken fried with peppers and onions. I like the thin steaks.
It's funny, we've lived in Miami so long that the whole family now prefers thinner steaks, as Nicaraguans, Cubans, Argentines, like them, that's almost all we buy now. We are now making believers out of the rest of the family that lives in Virginia and Kentucky.

I have to hit the grocery store tonight (I like shopping on weekdays, less crowded) anyway, so I have been inspired to splurge on a few nice steaks for my family (and me).
What is it about the sight of a juicy steak that is so irresistable?
To: Sam Cree
I don't think mine have any - they're hiking boots rather than outdoor boots. But the most comfortable boots I've ever found, and good enough for general use. Plus I found them for way, way, way less than the proper price. I love 'em!
To: Sam Cree
Which one? The one on 117th or the one off of 92nd?
They are very good. At least, much better than La Carreta is!
Ropa vieja is one of my favorites! I love it when my mom makes some - it's great over rice or in a Cuban sandwich roll. Your wife is right on the money with that one.
For the best Cuban food, you should take the trip to Versailles on 8th street (3555 SW 8 st). It's in Little Havana and has hands-down the best food, coffee and desserts. And the portions are astounding!
To: RMDupree
I'm going to the grocery store too so I think I'll pick up some nice thick steaks along with the bread, milk, and cat food.
To: RMDupree
I don't know which, 92nd most likely.
There is a little Cuban butcher shop nearby, lot of times we just get takeout there and bring it home. He has pretty reasonable prices.
