The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

That's exactly how I am with the the 82nd in Afghanistan. It just turned out to be the Hobbit Hole project, I never expected it to. I will probably always try to get those guys something!

Just posting that one shot of stuff from us doens't tell half the story. We were all so surprised/shocked/humbled in the last month when the men of the 82nd in Kandahar began sending each of us gifts of appreciation! It was one of the most humbling things that's ever happened to me. They offer to lay down their lives and yet, send us a gift!

gee, I could go off into gospel ramblings on that one!

Well, we're taking the HH's message count to the max, and then we get to open up a brand new one. "65535" fits into 16 bits, and is probably the counter, with a pointer attached, pointing to the latest post. I don't know about how this software works, but going one above 65535 will either zero out the field, or the high-order bit will clobber some field next to it. In either case, it's not good. The software may handle that problem gracefully, or it may require manual intervention before that happens.

Of course, the software may use one or several of those "slots" pointed to by that 16-bit field for internal use. Thus the actual number to cause meltdown may be a bit less than 65535.

So does that mean it will explode then or not? Good morning!

I am impressed by their gratitude, even more so that they wished to express their thanks. You never know how one little thing can impact the life of another. And mostly, knowing that they are not forgotten, must give them comfort. Blessings to you for your continued support.

That's how many are in the platoon.

But, do you remember when I posted the rambling thing about my s-i-l having a "lawn chair club?" It's a group of guys from many platoons that get together after their work is done to hang out sitting out on the lawn. (of course - at saddam's used-to-be palace no less) A lot of the snack type things I'm sending are being shared at LCC. And there are lots more guys hanging out there.

Hence the Sam's size boxes of chips and honey buns!

On the Beach by Nevil Shute. Together with Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank and a little book called Red Alert by I know not who, some of my favorite reading when I was growing up. For some reason I enjoyed reading about TEOTWAWKI when I was young, I don't know why.

yawn Good morning.

The pit bull mix that my friend found on her way home from work yesterday. Super cute and friendly, but sadly, illegal in my county.

I wish I had taken a picture of him.

I don't know 2J. There was a lady in his platoon in Germany. She is the one who's husband walked out on her when she got orders to deploy --- and Jill kept her 2 children until the grandmother could get to Germany and get them. So, I'm thinking that there's at least one lady but I don't know if she's at the same place they are. I need to ask huh?

Ack....well it will depend on timing if I can afford it and all. When is the $200 needed? I leave on a trip in September so I'm not sure if I'll be able to swing it or not. What's the payment schedule?

Good morning! Welcome to our Long Expected Party!

Cool. Will there be a SpaceTime bubble so we can watch the festivities to their end?

IMHO, every dog deserves a name, a chance and someone to care for him/her! I consider it an honor to have been the one to show Bo the love he's obviously never had, even if only for one day.

Well, thanks. But, I feel that you already know, they are the ones really deserving of all the thanks. I just have so much trouble expressing my love and appreciation to our military! And it's cool to be able to share how warm and generous they are back to us!

I was looking for my photo but what they sent us as gifts were American flags that had each been flown for 1 day over headquarters in Kandahar. And each flag came with a certificate of appreciation and the date and location that it was flown! Mine is displayed prominently in my living room now. Wish I could share it with you! It is an object which will be an heirloom now.

I think the post to shoot for is 65,535. I think one of three things is likely to happen: 1) The thread is locked and no more posts are allowed; 2) You can compose a post, but when you click the "Post" button it causes a SQL error and nothing is posted; 3) Post #65,536 overwrites post #1.

My guess is, Option 2 happens for a few posts (as we're all trying to get in one last post) then the Admins lock the thread to prevent that from happening any more. So, Option 2 followed by Option 1.

Just a guess though. Good morning.

mornin', Ruthy... was wondering about the puppy, can you take him to a shelter in another county, where he would be legal? Just so they don't put him to sleep, I mean.

You will laugh about the box of chips. I have another one to send today. I will photo the process for you and let you see! I wanted the salsa to be with the chips so I opened the box, duct taped the salsa in and resealed the box. But, I also taped hotel shampoos in at the empty places to minimize chip shaking. They may have had crumbles but figure the less they bashed against the side the less crumbles there would be.
