Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hi Scott! Thanks for thinking of me sitting awake watching a movie at a completely unreasonable time!
I didn't feel tired. I feel lousy now, body clock all screwed up, but that is temporary!
It was sold out already when we arrived at nine. There were about 20 people in line that had probably been there since noon. Feeling unthreatened by that, we went next door to a restaurant and had some food and coffee. Ramius had Wild Turkey! And he stayed awake!
There are a lot of odd looking people there, but I was the only one in a cloak. Heh. Two people in line for popcorn said they really appreciated it, and that I added interest to the scenery for them. That is a good thing. It was raining in line, so I was glad I had it, and glad it was fleece. Other people brought blankets, my blanket was just more tailored than theirs!
We watched a bit of disk 2 of FoTR in line, umbrella over the laptop... and some young grunge-band type kids (teens) gathered around us and watched too. One was a Tolkien geek, and two of them were uncertain about the names of the characters, "Yeah - that guy was cool, what was his name? - Yeah Gandalf". I was astonished that people who didn't even have the characters straight, let alone lines memorized, were waiting two hours before at the midnight show to see this. But then, maybe I have forgotten what it is like to be young!
During the previews we were a bit worried about the raucusness of the crowd... But they settled right down when the movie started. People clapped and cheered mostly when they should have.

My daughter is driving down to watch it with me. Her dad is the one who started me reading the books.... So, we go together in his honor and remember his love for the books. Oi, he would love to be here for these movies, I know we would both love him to be with us too. How very special. I hope you have a great spot in time!

We are just really glad you came and checked in with us Vim! We were worried, and apparently, there was reason to be. Prayers for you and your family. Check in when you can. I know I can't imagine posting from an office job... I am a little different since I work from home, and I am immersed in sortof 24-hour office, reacting to calls and needs whenever they come. I give myself a bit of latitude to play when I can, in exchange for being available to respond all the time. I have a bit more latitude in deciding when to do the other stuff. Data can be entered any time, and it is!

Thank you for loving the Hobbit Hole enough to lurk, and thanks even more for adding to it!

I've been known since early childhood to have a favor for walking quietly through the woods and sort of absorbing the peace of God to be found there. Also one of my favorite things. A friend of the elves is a friend of mine!

I would just like to say for the record that if my experience on my second viewing today was any indicator of nationwide trends, this movie is going to have monster numbers for this weekend.
Friend and I hit the noon showing at the local megaplex. We saw it on the largest screen (500+ seats) and it was just about sold out.
We checked out the other two screens where it was showing - and they were in the same shape.
And the filmgoers were not retirees or kids out of school. Most looked to be "working age" - which means quite a lot of us took off work to see this thing.
To: SkyPilot
Wow... so you are in Germany? - Will you be seeing it dubbed or with Subtitles? - Tell us about that!
To: Overtaxed
Do you get the feeling that Vim's employers are elves?Nah... Elves don't punch a timeclock. They have time on their side.
To: Corin Stormhands
Look another honest snaig! Someone fetch Hair some medicine...I just think we have reached a whole new level of growth here, and you should all be proud!
To: 2Jedismom
Where's Hair??? Shouldn't she be checking in by now??? I was delayed.

That's what I was wondering...how were the audiences? Most of the time, I thought the audiences were unusually well behaved, the 5 times I went to see FOTR, and had an unusually large number of viewers that weren't high school kids. Even alot of middle aged folks like me.

Maybe I'll have the first funkle of our spiffy new home. Yours may have been the first, but I am committing the Mother of all funkles this afternoon, while all of you are away somewhere. I got 200 posts behind in a day! - 200 real good posts behind! - Not like when 100 of them were spam and it was easy to catch up!
To: Sam Cree
For the most part, the audience was one of the quietest I have been in. At a couple of the more crucial moments (Grima-Eowyn) you could have heard a pin drop. The only exception was someone who had brought their baby with them (!) but I only remember hearing it cry a little bit once.

Hello Carton! - Great review.... we will have a lot to talk about there as we go!
I liked most of the jokes. If PJ had made this many jokes in FoTR, I would have thought him too much of an outsider to make fun of any part of our story. Heh. But I think he is like us... poking fun with great affection. I cringed a couple times... "Shall I find you a box?" But I was cringing and smiling. Time will tell if I cringe again tonight.

He delivered the speech of the movie and he didnt do it sound trumpets and unfurl banners. He spoke to a wounded heart from a wound heart. That scene was great. When Frodo turned to kill him, you knew Sams heartbreak when he said to Frodo Im your Sam. Sam is going to move to the foreground for me in this movie... My tears will be for that scene I think... And for Frodo's face when he sees Gollum in the pool, and betrays him to save his life. I want to see that again.
I loved Gollum's face when he fetched the conies and dropped them on Frodo. Like my dog, so hungry for approval. I once woke up with a dead mouse on me and dog looking at me with the same pride of accomplishment and hope for praise. I have been repulsed by a dog who loves me, and it reminded me of that! ;~D
Even though it was corny, I gotta love the Brego scene because I love recognition of the real bonds that drive our beasts to work for us... And I noticed in Aragorn's ride home many opportunities taken for Viggo to show off his riding and show off that horse. It was like watching a dressage horse dance as he rode, not the yank and run riding of cowboy movies. Do non-horse people see that? I wonder?
To: ecurbh
Heh.... your post sounds like mine when I first got back... speaking in phrases. How are you now?
To: Sam Cree
Do you think it is as good as FOTR? I don't like this part of the story as much as I like the beginning and the end. I can read stories about just "walking and talking" and feel satisfied without there having been a horror along the way. I will never like it as much as FoTR, but I may love it in time, because it is these parts that break your heart.
It was a spot in time, indeed.
To: HairOfTheDog
Much better, thank you. I've been sitting here reading others thoughts and listening to the score over and over. Can't wait to see it again.
