The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Don't it feel good? I just feel good when I know there's food in the fridge! There have been times (in the past) where I'd open the fridge and be filled with angst! LOL
Today my Angel Food came in! Do you remember me talking about that? Where you order the food in advance, and pay for it in advance and then pick it up? We picked ours up today so the larder if pretty full, especially since the garden seems to be producing so well! Steve made two HUGE batches of salsa this morning! All fresh. Except no cilantro...which is extra nice, but not really required, imo

I am almost always full of angst when I look in the fridge.
Hmm....
Beer, mayonaise, lunch meat, some cheese, milk, and something in a leftover pot!

I got a fridge full of meals for myself this week. That will be handy.I do like to live that way.... and I have.... Living alone, my interest in cooking waxes and wanes... sometimes I am into it, but sometimes I just get tired of going to the trouble for just me, when I could just make a sammich.

LOL!!
I just got such a kick out of the menu for this past month...the box had turnip greens, yam sticks, chicken, peaches...
So southern! The ministry is based in Georgia.
I fried up some of the yam sticks when I made the eggplant. Pretty good stuff, Maynard! Tasted like a fried pie!
I gotta figure out how to cook turnip greens, now! LOL

This is rather vague, imo...what's tender??
Why can't they just say "Cook 'em for 30 minutes 27 seconds?"
Turnip Greens
3 lbs frozen turnip greens
1 cup diced ham or 6 strips of bacon
Place frozen greens in boiling water. Season with ham or bacon. Cook until tender. Do not over cook.

Tender is between 'crunchy' and 'mushy'
To: HairOfTheDog
Now that don't help me! LOL I hate subjectiveness...subjectivity...bah!
I found a nice casserole...calls for horseradish, which Steve and both love and have growing in the garden...

I am afraid the science of the perfectly cooked turnip green can only be subjective.

I'll just make the recipe in 58,726 and just fry up the cotton-pickin' bacon, by God!

If you fry up the bacon, then just sprinkle it on after cooking the greens, don't put it in the water.... The bacon will be will be crunchy then, which would be good.
I think they intend for you to put uncooked diced bacon into the boiling water. It will have very little taste that way, but I have seen it done.... little limp pieces of bacon in it... Grandma did green beans that way.

Dang! No, I didn't! I'll have to have SSQ take some tomorrow when Clare and I do our kayaking class.
I didn't have any trouble getting into the boat or paddling, but I had a heck of a time getting my fat self OUT of the thing! LOL. Finally, I just half stood, then threw one leg over the side into the shallow water. Worked like a charm. Just call me 'Grace'.
During the class tomorrow, we'll learn how to get back into the boat after having tipped over. There's some sort of flotation thing you hang on the paddle or something. I'll find out tomorrow.
To: 2Jedismom
What, you don't feel safe getting cooking advice from just me? ;~D
WN went to dinner and a movie with a friend I think.
To: SuziQ
Good! We want to experience the kayaking class with pictures! Tipping-over-day seems like a pretty good photo opportunity!
To: HairOfTheDog
Naw, I was just curious!
My ice cream is ready. Mmmmm! Vanilla, cause it's easy. 2 c of milk, 3 eggs and a cup of sugar cooked till slightly thickened, then cooled. 2 cups of cream added, two tsps vanilla...pour it in the Donvier and 45 minutes later, Ice cream!

I fried up some of the yam sticks Yam sticks? Are they already peeled and cut like french fries or something?
My Mama used to bake a bunch of sweet potatoes at one time; way too many for the meal. She would then take the leftover taters and slice them crossways and fry them. Now THAT'S some good eatin! I would imagine your yam sticks taste very much the same.
To: SuziQ
This are much like those commercial "french toast stickes" you know? Except they are battered strips of sweet potatoe. They were crispy like a fried pie on the outside and like pudding on the inside. I found if I cooked them too long, they were burst and the sweet potatoe would come out like ooze.
They were very tasty!
I'm thinking of cooking a hunk of salt pork with my greens...
