The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Yeah, gold leaf comes in book form, you can bend it or curl it, but it's so thin that you can not touch it with your fingers or it turns to dust and is ruined. The patent gold is handled with special paper that adheres to it, while glass gold is handled with very smooth camel's hair "brushes" that, when rubbed thru your hair develop the ability to pick up the leaves, or pieces of them, from out of the book. The patent gold would work on the bows.

"Was at our club's winter Arms Show"

Man, that sounds fascinating, I would love to have been there and seen that stuff, what state do you live in?

I had no idea that air rifles were made in anything like .45, much less that Lewis and Clark carried one. Lewis lived for awhile in the neighborhood I grew up in. The guy was something of a sad case, though nothing can take away from his accomplishments.

I would like someday to find a Parker in 20 gauge, though it will have to be a wreck for me to afford it. Would be fun to have, though. Would also like to have an antigue rifle or smoothbore, maybe the best thing is to get a kit, then I could actually hunt with the thing. I like working with wood, anyway. By LC, do you mean LC Smith? Am not familiar with the Krieghoffs and Merkels.

Since you are sitting next to the keg, would you fill up my mug and pass it over?

"Didn't get in any blows or arguements"

That is good, I guess, though if the wierdo comes around, I think you can go ahead and call him a fat cow or whatever ;-)

"letting go of old grievances"

I think that is good, putting aside one's anger, it can be hard to do, though.

Yeah, I thought that grave scene was moving, also at Aragorn's grave.

Wonder if Wneighbor got some digital pictures?

Sam: keep meaning to fly the flag - Missouri (or Missourah as we say on this side of the state). Here's your mug, it's full again.

Going from memory here - air gun technology was pretty amazing especially for the time period. The gun was full sized, had a large (soft ball sized) brass or iron globe directly in from of the trigger guard or the butt stock was the air reservoir and it unscrewed for refilling. Used a bicycle type pump but also a lever. A poacher or sniper's dream weapon. I believe Napolean issued orders to execute any enemy captured with one. Certainly powerful enough for both activities. L & C carried one with a ball reservoir and looked like a regular rifle except for that. Was used for demonstrations with the Indians they met, I believe they shot a deer or two with it. The external hammer was often small but one had what appeared to be a full functioning flintlock but without a touch hole above the pan.

Kreighoffs and Merkels are German shotguns, double rifles and drillings. Top drawer quality.

Until recently, the damascus or black powder cartridge Parkers and others were fairly reasonable. Simply handload black powder shells. Alas, those days are gone as well. One fellow I knew bought a pair of the old Savage 4-Teners which allowed him to use .410 shells.

Here is the part where Eomer uses Westu.

'Take this, dear lord!' said a clear voice. 'It was ever at your service.' Two men had come softly up the stair and stood now a few steps from the top. Éomer was there. No helm was on his head, no mail was on his breast, but in his hand he held a drawn sword; and as he knelt he offered the hilt to his master.
'How comes this?' said Théoden sternly. He turned towards Éomer and the men looked in wonder at him, standing now proud and erect. Where was the old man whom they had left crouching in his chair or leaning on his stick?
'It is my doing, lord,' said Háma, trembling. I understood that Éomer was to be set free. Such joy was in my heart that maybe I have erred. Yet, since he was free again, and he a Marshal of the Mark, I brought him his sword as he bade me.'
'To lay at your feet, my lord,' said Éomer. For a moment of silence Théoden stood looking down at Éomer as he knelt still before him. Neither moved.
'Will you not take the sword?' said Gandalf.
Slowly Théoden stretched forth his hand. As his fingers took the hilt, it seemed to the watchers that firmness and strength returned to his thin arm. Suddenly he lifted the blade and swung it shimmering and whistling in the air. Then he gave a great cry. His voice rang clear as he chanted in the tongue of Rohan a call to arms.

Arise now, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Dire deeds awake, dark is it eastward.
Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded! Forth Eorlingas!

The guards, thinking that they were summoned, sprang up the stair. They looked at their lord in amazement, and then as one man they drew their swords and laid them at his feet. 'Command us!' they said.
'Westu Théoden hál!' cried Éomer. 'It is a joy to us to see you return into your own. Never again shall it be said, Gandalf, that you come only with grief!' [JRR Tolkien, The Two Towers, Book 3, Chapter 6, The King of the Golden Hall]

And here is where Eowyn hails Theoden with the cup of wine:

The king now rose, and at once Éowyn came forward bearing wine. 'Ferthu Théoden hál!' she said. 'Receive now this cup and drink in happy hour. Health be with thee at thy going and coming!'[ibid]

last night, when Signs was on

Hi, Sam! Did you watch Signs then? If you did, I'm very curious to hear your thoughts about the movie!

So "Ferthu" has something to do with wine, right? Hehehe

The words are so similar!

"Receive now this cup and drink in happy hour"

So that is where we get the expression "the happy hour?"

Yeah, we liked Signs. Good movie.

It is hard to not like Mel Gibson, he is such a sympathetic character. Thought he was very good in this one.

How does a "father" have children and a wife? Or do other denominations also refer to ministers that way?

OT: When we moved here from Texas, we moved into an apartment in Overland Park KS. We moved to MO when Susan got a job with local government, residency and all that.

It's really 6 of one half a dozen of the other. Both have great areas. Both have good schools in the suburbs. Remember MO elected a dead guy in 2000.Kansas taxes are somewhat higher.
Depends on what you're looking for, I guess. Mo alternates between Repub and Demo, KS usually Repub but this time around elected a pro-choice Demo woman, go figure. KC MO has an earnings tax regardless of residency.

Just wondering.....things were kind of slow last Friday at work so I was scoping out real estate.

Sometimes I can't decide which is more trouble....moving or finding another job.

It looks like income taxes are lower than NC (7%), right?

Heh, yes, that distracted me at first too. I think there are some denominations that use "father" to refer to ministers. I'm no expert, though... I was raised in the Presbyterian church, and we always referred to our minister as "Reverend". For some reason I had the impression that Mel Gibson's character was Episcopalian, but I don't think it's ever said in the movie what denomination he was.

I'm back! They have all gone to choir. I've got 2 hours here!

I baked some more cookies and Joshua came in all downcast, asked me..."Who are those cookies for?" I turned and said "These cookies are for YOU!" He was thrilled. (Really, you would think I tortured him with all those cookies I baked and sent off...but I did give each of the boys a couple of cookies before I boxed up the rest.)

I still can't believe it that Hair hasn't gotten hers. I mailed hers out first!! I used a small town post office, though...but it was the same post office that sent yours! I can't figure it.

Rosie, did you get yours??
