Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I am. My friend ended up going home last night instead of here, so we are getting a later start. She will be here in about a half-hour.

Can't think of any! There just aren't many good movies anymore!
I watched Fellowship last night!

Last night was monster night on TCM...they showed a lot of those old Universal movies.
To: Overtaxed
Steak and eggs, I think :-)
To: HairOfTheDog
Heeheee, that must be a sight to see! LOL!
To: Sam Cree
Mmmm....sounds good! What time should we be there?
To: HairOfTheDog
How do your dogs react to Black Rider screams? The cat's ears twitch....I don't think she likes it.
To: Overtaxed
Nothing. She doesn't react to the Black Riders at all! LOL! She reacts to Gollum, and she reacts to people who are in aggressive postures, especially if they are swinging weapons around... if the picture is fairly contrasty, like the final battle scene in FoTR, but not the darker scenes in Moria. (she gets really ticked off at baseball games and golf too.... anything with weapons)
Her favorites though, are the dogs barking, and the wargs.

Sam: The "gold leaf" is likely a paint of some sort, protected by several coats of clear finish. The limbs flex so I doubt real gold leaf would be used. The wear from use would be if the finish was worn or scratched from use in the field. I've seen a number of fairly complex ink designs on bow limbs, they are also protected by a clear finish. There are a few artists in our bowmaking clan that look upon the bow limb as another "canvas" to display their art. Can be quite effective, especially those of a celtic design.

"The "gold leaf" is likely a paint of some sort"
Probably you're right, as not everyone knows how to apply gold leaf, though it is not really that hard to do, nor really even that expensive, relative to the likely costs of the bow.
I did some gold leaf lettering over the years, on various outdoor and indoor surfaces, in 23k usually, which won't tarnish, it holds up as well as paint, or at least varnish, when protected with clear, and should be able to handle a little flexing. I think the best clear is probably Awl Grip, or something similar, as it was originally designed for jet airplanes, I believe, which means it'll take real abuse.
I think gold leaf has a beautiful appearance, like nothing else, sad that you don't see as much of it as in days gone by. There was a time, only about 2o years ago, when every fire truck's lettering, every yacht's name, every jewelry store's window lettering was done in gold leaf.
To my mind the mylar and computerized imitations fall far short, though they are reasonably attractive in their own right.

"How do your dogs react to Black Rider screams?"
I haven't noticed, since I am usually kind of absorbed myself when they are on screen.
Though, last night, when Signs was on, one of the dogs got very excited about the movie german shepard barking at the aliens, and had to be let out, where he thought he would be able to confront whatever danger was there.

This could be my answer to Sabertooth's cat!

Well, I went back to church for the first time in what? Months! Didn't get in any blows or arguements, but the service was very moving, about starting off the year letting go of old grievances. I cried all the way through it. I did not go to Sunday school, but am inching that direction, I think.
I have a question...does anyone know exactly what Gandalf is saying at Theodred's grave? He said certainly "Westu Fal..." and then something else.
Is that a heartbreaking scene or what? I really love this movie.

Sam: thanks for the insight into gold leaf, I didn't think it was flexible in least, but so far as looks, it would be stunning. Also didn't know that the lettering on fire trucks used it, they did look stunning in the "olden days".
Was at our club's winter Arms Show, only missed a club show once in the last 20 years or so. Displays abound, and weaponry-London's best, Colts & SW's of every vintage. It's predominately high quality collector and sportsman's arms. Of particular interest was a collection of a dozen or so air rifles from 1750-1820, .30 to about .45. Doubtless some were smoothbores. Simply fascinating. One was similar to the one carried by Lewis and Clark. Another was a display of WWI machine guns, about 8 in all. High on the drool factor was a dealer with a nice assortment of Kreighoffs, Merkels, LC's and Parkers, about 50 or so in all.
Oh, what did I pickup, nothing except a knit helmet liner (aka the Radar O'Reily hat) from a militaria dealer. They're still being made.

2JM, glad it went well, hope it continues.
FOTR-ES goes back today, sigh, guess I better get there with it.

I want a pair of these:
